Just when Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai started building strong buzz with its trailer launch, the film suddenly found itself stuck in fresh controversy because of the recreated version of the iconic song “Chunnari Chunnari.” The remake, featuring Varun Dhawan alongside Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur, reportedly triggered legal objections from producer Vashu Bhagnani. The issue became serious enough that a court notice was recently issued amid the ongoing dispute, and many online even believed this was one reason behind the sudden delay of the film’s trailer event earlier this week.
Even though the situation grabbed attention quickly, producer Ramesh Taurani tried calming things down during the trailer launch event. Speaking to reporters, Taurani insisted that the matter had mostly been resolved and said there was “no problem” regarding the recreated track anymore. He also assured everyone that neither the promotional campaign nor the theatrical release would face delays because of the issue. At the same time though, he admitted the case remains sub judice and confirmed the team is still handling the legal side carefully behind closed doors.
Vashu Bhagnani Says the Issue Became Emotional
The controversy became bigger after Vashu Bhagnani publicly expressed disappointment about songs connected to his film Biwi No.1 being recreated for another project. According to him, while the music rights may have been licensed legally through Tips Music, he still expected director David Dhawan to personally inform him before reusing such iconic tracks. Bhagnani especially pointed out that David’s own son Varun stars in the movie, making the situation feel even more personal to him rather than just business-related. His comments quickly sparked debate online about whether legal permissions alone are enough when it comes to classic Bollywood songs tied deeply to producers and old collaborations.
The producer also became visibly emotional while speaking about his longtime relationship with David Dhawan. He explained that money was never the main issue and suggested the matter hurt more on a personal level because of years of friendship and professional trust between their families. Bhagnani also questioned how the same songs connected to one producer’s film could simply be recreated again for another banner without proper communication. That emotional angle is honestly what made this controversy feel bigger than a normal industry rights dispute.
Varun Dhawan Calls the Song Recreation ‘Fun and Challenging’
Meanwhile, Varun Dhawan opened up about recreating “Chunnari Chunnari” during the event and described the experience as exciting rather than controversial. The actor revealed that the team first heard the recreated version while shooting in Scotland and immediately felt the energy matched the tone of the film. He praised Ramesh Taurani and the music team for handling the production side smoothly and said the recreated track was designed differently to fit the movie’s comedy-heavy storyline instead of simply copying the original song.
According to Varun, the biggest challenge was making the song work naturally within the film’s chaotic romantic confusion. He explained that the “double trouble” angle involving his interactions with both female leads becomes an important comic situation in the movie, and the song helps push that madness even further. From what the trailer already showed, the film seems fully committed to loud comedy, awkward misunderstandings and classic David Dhawan-style confusion rather than realistic storytelling.
Apart from the ongoing legal drama, the film itself continues gaining attention online because of its music, colourful visuals and nostalgic Bollywood vibe. Produced by Tips Films, the romantic comedy also stars Mouni Roy, Jimmy Shergill, Chunky Panday and Manish Paul in supporting roles. “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai” is currently scheduled to hit theatres on June 5, 2026.
