Pongal releases usually enjoy a long theatrical run—but Karthi’s latest film Vaa Vaathiyaar has taken a very different route. Just 14 days after its cinema debut, the action-comedy has made a quick jump to OTT, sparking fresh chatter among Tamil film audiences.

The film, which released in theatres during Pongal after a troubled road to release, is now streaming on Prime Video from January 28.

A rare early OTT move in Tamil cinema

Directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, Vaa Vaathiyaar has broken the usual four-week theatrical window that most Tamil films follow. Prime Video has acquired the digital rights for Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, making the film accessible to a wider audience within days of its theatrical run.

Originally planned for a December release, the film was pushed to Pongal after multiple delays—partly due to scheduling clashes with other big releases, including Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, and partly due to unresolved financial hurdles.

Box office response and reception

Despite a festive release window, Vaa Vaathiyaar failed to find strong footing at the box office. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the film is expected to close its worldwide theatrical run at around ₹11 crore, placing it among the lowest-grossing films in Karthi’s career.

Critical reception was largely mixed to negative, with reviewers pointing out that the film’s promising idea didn’t fully translate into an engaging big-screen experience. With limited screens and lukewarm word-of-mouth, the film’s two-week theatrical run ended quietly—making the early OTT move almost inevitable.

Legal troubles that delayed the release

The film’s journey to theatres was far from smooth. In 2025, Vaa Vaathiyaar faced repeated release blocks due to legal issues tied to producer K. E. Gnanavel Raja. The Madras High Court had stayed the release until outstanding dues—over ₹21 crore including interest—were settled with the estate of late financier Arjunlal Sunderdas.

Despite partial payments and multiple appeals, the court maintained its stance, which ultimately forced the film to miss its original December 2025 release and arrive much later during Pongal.

Story, cast, and what the film is about

Produced under the Studio Green banner, Vaa Vaathiyaar is positioned as a tribute to legendary actor and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran.

Karthi plays Ramu, a cheerful police officer raised by his grandfather, an ardent MGR fan. When circumstances threaten his grandfather’s ideals and beliefs, Ramu is forced to mature and shoulder greater responsibility—leading to a personal transformation.

The film also marks the Tamil debut of Krithi Shetty, alongside a large ensemble cast that includes Sathyaraj, Raj Kiran, Anandraj, Karunakaran, and several others.

Music for the film is composed by Santhosh Narayanan.

Final words

With Vaa Vaathiyaar landing on OTT just two weeks after its theatrical release, the film’s digital debut may give it a second life among home viewers. While it struggled to make an impact at the box office, the early Prime Video release offers audiences a chance to revisit—or discover—the film without the weight of expectations tied to its troubled cinema run.

Sometimes, a quieter OTT watch works better than a noisy theatrical outing—and Vaa Vaathiyaar is now hoping for exactly that.
