Tom Cruise has officially added one of the Academy’s highest honours to his legendary résumé. At the Governors Awards on November 16, the actor was presented with the Academy Honorary Award, marking a defining moment in his four-decade-long Hollywood career. The evening became even more meaningful as the award was handed to him by filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who is currently directing Cruise in an upcoming untitled film slated for release in October 2026.
Cruise’s Emotional Speech Celebrating Cinema
Taking the stage, Cruise delivered a heartfelt speech that celebrated the universal magic of storytelling and the way cinema brings people together across cultures and borders.
“Cinema takes me around the world,” he said. “It helps me appreciate differences, but also our shared humanity. No matter where we come from, in that theater, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together.”
He added that making films isn’t just a profession—it defines who he is:
“Making films is not what I do, it is who I am.”
Cruise also opened up about how his love for cinema began. He vividly described being a young boy in a dark theater, mesmerized by the beam of light hitting the screen — a moment that sparked his lifelong desire to explore, create, and understand the world.
“Entire cultures and landscapes unfolded in front of me. It opened my imagination, my hunger for adventure and knowledge, my desire to tell stories.”

- Best Actor for Born on the Fourth of July

- Best Picture nomination as a producer of Top Gun: Maverick
Other honorees of the night included:
