Disney Teams Up With TikTok for Short-Form Videos

Disney is making a major push into short-form entertainment through a new partnership with TikTok, bringing creator-driven videos based on some of its biggest franchises to Disney+. The collaboration will allow eligible TikTok creators to produce original vertical videos inspired by characters and stories from Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, FX and other Disney-owned brands. Those videos will not only appear on TikTok but will also be featured on Disney+ as part of the streaming service’s growing Verts format.

The partnership reflects Disney’s broader strategy to connect with younger audiences who increasingly consume bite-sized content across social media platforms. Rather than treating TikTok purely as a marketing channel, Disney is now turning creators into collaborators, hoping to expand fan engagement beyond traditional films and television series.

Disney expands its short-form content strategy

The collaboration will initially launch in the United States over the coming months before expanding to additional international markets. Although financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, both companies say the initiative is designed to strengthen the connection between Disney’s storytelling and the creativity of online fan communities.

Explaining the vision behind the partnership, Disney Chief Marketing and Brand Officer Asad Ayaz said, “This collaboration creates a new bridge between the stories we tell and the creativity they inspire, giving creators a bigger stage to share what they’ve made, and audiences more to discover on Disney+ every day.”

Participating creators will receive access to official assets from Disney’s extensive catalogue of films and television series, allowing them to produce content inspired by hundreds of titles. The videos will become part of Verts, Disney’s vertical video experience that is gradually expanding across the company’s streaming platforms as it experiments with new viewing formats.

TikTok creators will receive exclusive opportunities

Beyond publishing short videos, Disney and TikTok are also launching a Disney Creator Ambassador Program. The initiative is expected to provide selected creators with exclusive experiences, professional development opportunities and invitations to special Disney events, giving them closer access to the company’s entertainment brands.

Fans will also benefit from new Disney-focused experiences inside TikTok, with regularly updated content designed to encourage interaction between creators and audiences. The companies hope these initiatives will strengthen online fan communities while introducing Disney franchises to younger viewers who spend much of their time watching short-form videos.

TikTok’s Global Head of Entertainment, Dawn Yang, welcomed the partnership, saying, “Together with Disney, we’re bringing the authentic creator expression of the TikTok community to Disney+, inviting audiences to experience the shared creativity that makes fandom so powerful.”

Disney doubles down on Gen Alpha audiences

Disney has been signalling its growing interest in short-form content for several months. The company previously introduced Verts on ESPN’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform before announcing plans to bring the format to Disney+. Executives believe the strategy is particularly important as younger viewers increasingly discover entertainment through social media rather than traditional television.

Earlier this year, Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro highlighted the company’s focus on evolving viewing habits. He said, “Short form and creative content, they’ve exploded in the past few years, and it’s an area we’re focused on because we have deeply committed fans who, you know, love our brands and our franchises and characters, and they want to engage with them in this new way.” He also added, “This is specifically important when we think about Gen Alpha, obviously, the newest generation of Disney fans. What we’re doing is we’re experimenting with short-form content in a variety of ways.”

The TikTok partnership also arrives after Disney’s previously announced collaboration with OpenAI around the Sora video-generation platform was ultimately discontinued when OpenAI shut down the service. Rather than relying on AI-generated content, Disney is now focusing on human creators to produce authentic fan-driven videos based on its intellectual property.

Industry research suggests the strategy could help drive additional viewership across Disney’s streaming platforms. According to an Ipsos survey commissioned by TikTok, nearly half of respondents said discovering entertainment-related content on TikTok encouraged them to watch a movie or television show later on a streaming service or traditional television. By bringing fan-created videos directly into Disney+, the company is betting that social creativity can become another gateway to its growing library of films and series.
