Warhammer 40,000 Animated Series Set at Amazon

Amazon MGM Studios is continuing its push into video game adaptations with another major expansion of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. While fans are still waiting for updates on the previously announced live-action series starring Henry Cavill, the franchise is now getting an animated event series that will run alongside it. The new project is being developed in collaboration with Blur Studios and Games Workshop, marking another significant investment in one of gaming’s most beloved science-fiction properties.

The announcement also strengthens Amazon’s long-term commitment to Warhammer, suggesting the studio sees the franchise as a multi-project universe rather than a single television series. For fans, it means there will be more than one way to experience the grim future of the 41st millennium.

Henry Cavill Expands His Role in the Warhammer Universe

Henry Cavill, who is already attached to star in and executive produce Amazon’s live-action Warhammer 40,000 series, will also serve as an executive producer on the newly announced animated project. The animated series is being developed alongside the live-action adaptation, although Amazon has not revealed whether the stories will directly connect.

The project will build on the success of the Warhammer 40,000 episode featured in Secret Level, Amazon’s animated anthology series that premiered in late 2024. That episode earned praise from longtime fans for its faithful recreation of the franchise’s dark atmosphere and detailed world-building, encouraging the creative team to expand the story into a full series.

Speaking about the announcement, director and co-creator Dave Wilson said, “‘Secret Level’ wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories. The response to the ‘Warhammer’ episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right. This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story. I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in ‘Warhammer 40,000’ for more than twenty years, and I’m incredibly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to do it.”

The Deathwatch Takes Centre Stage

Although Amazon is keeping most story details under wraps, it has confirmed that the animated series will focus on The Deathwatch, an elite chapter of Space Marines known for battling alien threats across the galaxy. Unlike traditional Space Marine chapters, the Deathwatch recruits experienced warriors from multiple chapters, creating highly specialised teams capable of handling some of humanity’s most dangerous missions.

The series is being co-created by Dave Wilson, who directed the Warhammer episode of Secret Level, alongside John Orloff, whose previous credits include Band of Brothers and Masters of the Air. Wilson will also direct the series, while Tim Miller, creator of Secret Level, joins the production as an executive producer for Blur Studios. Executive producing alongside them are Henry Cavill, Natalie Viscuso, Roy Lee, and Andy Smillie, with Games Workshop partnering directly with Amazon MGM Studios throughout development.

For longtime Warhammer fans, the decision to spotlight the Deathwatch offers an opportunity to explore one of the franchise’s most respected military forces while introducing newcomers to the expansive lore without requiring knowledge of decades of tabletop history.

Amazon Continues Building a Gaming Universe

The animated Warhammer 40,000 series is the latest addition to Amazon’s rapidly growing catalogue of game-inspired projects. Following the success of Fallout, the studio has continued investing heavily in adaptations of well-known gaming franchises as it looks to establish itself as a major destination for genre television.

Among the projects currently in development are a live-action Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner, a television adaptation of God of War, as well as series based on Mass Effect, Wolfenstein, and Life Is Strange. Together, these productions reflect Amazon’s long-term strategy of building multiple interconnected gaming brands capable of attracting both dedicated fans and broader audiences.

While no release window has been announced for either the animated or live-action Warhammer 40,000 projects, the latest announcement confirms that Amazon’s plans for the franchise extend far beyond a single series. With Henry Cavill remaining closely involved behind the scenes and a creative team deeply familiar with the source material, anticipation is likely to grow as more details emerge in the months ahead.
