One of Netflix’s biggest breakout surprises this year has come from South Korea, and even its own cast apparently didn’t see the explosion coming. Kang Mi Na is now opening up about the unexpected global popularity of If Wishes Could Kill, the dark high-school horror thriller that has quietly turned into an international streaming obsession over the last few weeks.
The series revolves around a mysterious wish-granting mobile application called Girigo, an app that initially appears magical and harmless before slowly pulling its teenage users into increasingly disturbing and deadly consequences. While the premise sounds like classic supernatural horror on paper, the show became popular largely because of how it mixes psychological tension, school drama, internet culture, and emotional manipulation into something that feels strangely believable for modern audiences.
Speaking recently from Seoul, Mi Na admitted she was completely overwhelmed by the response the series received worldwide. According to the actress, nobody expected the show to connect with viewers at this level, especially because the cast itself was relatively unfamiliar internationally before the release. But once the show hit Netflix globally, social media clips, fan theories, edits, and discussions around the Girigo app concept exploded almost overnight.
Mi Na believes the biggest reason audiences connected with the series was the unsettling idea behind it — an app capable of granting wishes, but demanding terrifying consequences in return. She explained that much of the show’s tension comes from constantly blurring the line between truth, manipulation, illusion, and reality, which leaves viewers emotionally unsettled throughout the story.
And honestly, that concept probably arrived at the perfect time. Modern horror has increasingly moved away from traditional ghosts and monsters toward digital anxiety, online obsession, and technology-driven paranoia. Instead of relying only on jump scares, If Wishes Could Kill taps into fears audiences already live with daily — smartphones, social validation, social media addiction, and the dangerous temptation of instant gratification.
Mi Na revealed she became hooked on the project immediately after reading the script for the first time. According to her, the screenplay was so immersive she ended up reading it in one sitting. Beyond the horror elements themselves, she was especially fascinated by the mysterious origins of the Girigo app and the mythology surrounding how the application became cursed in the first place.
In the series, Mi Na plays Lim Na Ri, a wealthy and entitled student whose storyline gradually shifts into much darker emotional territory as the show progresses. The actress admitted the role challenged her because it was her first time portraying a character with such openly selfish and morally troubling traits. Rather than judging Na Ri while performing the role, Mi Na said she tried to approach the character naturally and focus on making audiences understand her emotional circumstances even when her actions became difficult to defend.
One of the trickiest parts of filming apparently involved the show’s body-swap storyline involving Na Ri and another principal character. Mi Na explained that switching rapidly between different emotional identities inside the same body became one of the hardest acting challenges she has faced so far in her career. According to her, balancing those sudden personality shifts without making them feel exaggerated required constant discussions with the director while filming scenes.
Interestingly, Mi Na also revealed that the project pushed her deeper into the horror genre personally. During production, she reportedly watched numerous horror films to better understand atmosphere, tension, and emotional pacing. That preparation likely helped give the series its more psychological tone compared to many traditional teen thrillers currently flooding streaming platforms.
Despite the show’s dark themes surrounding technology and digital corruption, Mi Na joked that her own relationship with devices has not dramatically changed after filming. Still, she laughed while admitting she absolutely would never dare to download an app like Girigo if it existed in real life. That playful answer perfectly reflects why the series works so well — beneath the horror, the concept still feels just realistic enough to become genuinely uncomfortable.
The actress also shared that the project unexpectedly left her with a more personal takeaway about life itself. According to Mi Na, the story reinforced the idea that nothing truly comes for free, especially when shortcuts and easy rewards are involved. That theme runs heavily throughout the show as characters repeatedly sacrifice pieces of themselves emotionally and morally in exchange for getting what they desire most.
Before becoming an actress, Mi Na was already known in the K-pop world as a member of I.O.I and Gugudan. Over the last few years, though, she has steadily built a strong acting résumé through dramas like Cafe Minamdang, Welcome to Samdalri, and Twelve. Many fans have especially praised her ability to handle emotionally intense and psychologically layered characters onscreen.
Now, after the success of If Wishes Could Kill, Mi Na says she hopes to eventually explore more grounded romance stories in the future instead of only darker material. But at the same time, she also made it clear she’s open to international opportunities — including possible collaborations with India as Korean entertainment continues growing massively across global markets.
With Korean horror dramas becoming increasingly experimental and internationally successful, If Wishes Could Kill feels like another sign that audiences are hungry for genre stories built around modern fears instead of old formulas.
