Tamil cinema superstar and political leader Vijay found himself at the centre of a serious legal spotlight on Monday, as he was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the tragic Karur stampede case.
The questioning comes months after the deadly incident that shook Tamil Nadu and raised uncomfortable questions about crowd management and accountability during political rallies.
Six hours of questioning at CBI headquarters
According to agency reports, Vijay was questioned for nearly six hours on January 12 at the CBI headquarters in Delhi. He arrived at the office around 11:29 AM and left shortly after 6:15 PM, after completing the day’s formal questioning.
Sources within the agency indicated that the actor-politician may be called again, as certain aspects of the case still require clarification. While the CBI had initially asked him to appear again on January 13, Vijay reportedly requested a different date, citing the ongoing Pongal festival.
He travelled to Delhi from Chennai on a chartered flight, accompanied by members of his political outfit, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Supporters gather outside headquarters
As news of the questioning spread, several Vijay supporters gathered outside the CBI premises to express solidarity with the TVK chief. The scene underscored the actor’s massive fan following — one that now overlaps with his growing political base.
Inside the office, Vijay was questioned by a team from the CBI’s anti-corruption unit, which is handling the investigation.
What the Karur stampede case is about
The case traces back to September 27, when a massive crowd turned up for a TVK political rally in Karur district, around 400 km from Chennai. What was meant to be a show of political strength quickly descended into chaos.
The stampede claimed 41 lives and left more than 60 people injured, making it one of the deadliest political rally disasters in recent Tamil Nadu history. The scale of the tragedy triggered widespread outrage and intense scrutiny of event planning, security arrangements, and police preparedness.
Why the CBI stepped in
The investigation was handed over to the CBI after the Supreme Court of India intervened on October 26. In its order, the court expressed concern over statements made by senior Tamil Nadu police officials who appeared to defend their subordinates soon after the incident.
The apex court observed that such responses had eroded public confidence, stressing the need for an “impartial, independent and unbiased” probe to restore faith in the justice system.
A crucial moment for Vijay’s political journey
For Vijay, who has been carefully building his political identity alongside his film career, the Karur stampede case represents a defining moment. While no conclusions have been drawn yet, the prolonged questioning signals the seriousness with which the agency is approaching the investigation.
As the probe continues, all eyes will be on the next steps taken by the CBI — and how this episode shapes the future of Vijay’s political ambitions in Tamil Nadu.
Final words
The Karur stampede remains a painful chapter for dozens of families, and the investigation is now firmly in a critical phase. Vijay’s six-hour questioning marks a significant development in the case, reinforcing that accountability will be closely examined — regardless of fame or political stature.
