Jr NTR’s Devara: Part 1 may have performed strongly at the box office, but it now looks like the sequel is facing a slower journey toward production than fans originally expected. According to recent reports, the actor has reportedly decided to temporarily pause work on Devara 2 while waiting for a stronger and more refined version of the script. While the makers themselves have not officially confirmed the development yet, industry conversations around the project have suddenly become much more intense after producer Lagadapati Sridhar shared his thoughts on why the sequel may be getting delayed.
Speaking about the situation, Sridhar suggested that changing audience expectations are playing a major role behind the cautious approach. According to him, viewers today are no longer automatically satisfied with massive star-led spectacles unless the storytelling itself feels emotionally engaging and relatable. He reportedly pointed out that fictional period-style commercial dramas are slowly losing their grip on audiences, especially when compared to stories grounded in stronger emotional realism and contemporary themes.
That observation honestly reflects a much bigger shift currently happening across Telugu cinema and Indian commercial films overall. Over the last few years, audiences have started becoming far more vocal about weak writing even in large-scale star vehicles. Films that once relied entirely on hero elevation scenes, larger-than-life action, and mythic storytelling are now being judged more harshly if the emotional writing feels shallow or repetitive. It seems Jr NTR and the team may be fully aware of that changing landscape.
Sridhar also reportedly mentioned that the narrative structure of the first Devara somewhat limited Jr NTR’s screen presence despite the actor’s committed performance. That comment is interesting because many viewers actually praised the actor’s intensity in the film while simultaneously criticizing parts of the screenplay, especially the pacing and second-half execution. Even though the movie earned impressive box office numbers, discussions around its climax and unresolved threads continued online long after release.
One of the biggest criticisms surrounding Devara: Part 1 involved its ending. Several viewers felt the climax focused more on setting up future installments rather than delivering a fully satisfying emotional payoff within the first film itself. Others believed the screenplay became uneven once the story shifted toward Vara, the softer and more hesitant son of Devara. While the dual-character setup gave Jr NTR room to experiment, some audiences felt the film struggled balancing mythology-style heroism with emotional depth.
Released in 2024 and directed by Koratala Siva, the movie featured Jr NTR in a dual-shaded role against the backdrop of a violent coastal smuggling network operating in the fictional Red Sea region during the 1980s and 1990s. The film attempted blending mass-action storytelling with emotional family conflict and political betrayal, while also creating a larger cinematic world for future sequels.
The story followed Devara, a feared village chieftain deeply involved in illegal smuggling operations alongside Bhaira, played by Saif Ali Khan. But once Devara discovers that the network is secretly trafficking illegal weapons, he turns against the operation entirely, leading to betrayal, violence, and eventually his mysterious disappearance. The later sections then shift focus toward Vara, whose contrasting personality lays the groundwork for the sequel’s emotional and action-heavy future conflict.
Despite mixed reactions to parts of the screenplay, Devara still became one of the bigger commercial Telugu releases of the year because of Jr NTR’s massive fanbase and the film’s visual scale. The action sequences, Anirudh Ravichander’s background score, and the coastal setting received strong praise from audiences. But now it appears the makers want the sequel to do more than simply repeat the first film’s formula.
Sridhar reportedly emphasized that Jr NTR should now become even more selective with scripts and collaborators if he wants to continue expanding his reach beyond existing fan bases. According to him, the actor needs stories that not only match his charisma but also connect more deeply with wider audiences across markets. That advice actually comes at an important stage in Jr NTR’s career because the actor is now balancing pan-India expectations following the global success of RRR.
After RRR, audience expectations from every Jr NTR project have increased massively. Fans no longer expect only commercial entertainment — they expect emotionally powerful storytelling, memorable character arcs, and larger cinematic ambition. That pressure likely explains why the actor reportedly wants Devara 2 to undergo stronger script development before moving ahead officially.
At the moment, there’s still no confirmation about when production might restart or whether the sequel could undergo major story changes during rewriting. But if the reports are accurate, the delay may actually benefit the film in the long run. Recent Indian cinema history has already shown that audiences are willing to wait longer for sequels if the final product feels stronger and more emotionally satisfying.
For now, Devara 2 remains one of Telugu cinema’s most closely watched upcoming projects — but clearly, Jr NTR and the makers do not want to rush it without a script they fully believe in.
