Dakota Johnson Praises Taylor Swift After ‘Patient Zero’

Dakota Johnson Says She Lost Film Role for Being ‘Too Polite’

Dakota Johnson usually has one piece of advice about mixing friendship and work: don’t do it.

Taylor Swift apparently proved to be an exception.

Johnson, who stars alongside Colin Farrell in Swift’s upcoming Patient Zero music video, has opened up about being directed by her longtime friend, saying their existing relationship made the collaboration surprisingly natural. Speaking at the London premiere of Verity, Johnson said they have known each other for years and “we respect each other’s creative minds.”

The comment offers a little more context for what initially looked like one of the more unexpected celebrity pairings in Swift’s latest visual project.

Dakota Johnson says working with Swift was ‘the best’

Johnson did not make the collaboration sound particularly complicated.

During an appearance on the Fangirl Nation podcast, she explained that she and Swift are very close and simply decided they wanted to work together. Although Johnson joked that she would normally tell people not to work with friends, she said the experience with Swift turned out differently.

“It was so fun. So fun. It was the best,” Johnson said.

Her remarks are especially interesting because Swift was not simply appearing alongside Johnson in the video. She directed Patient Zero herself, meaning Johnson was effectively stepping onto a friend’s set and allowing Swift to shape her performance.

Johnson seemed completely comfortable with that arrangement, describing the experience of supporting Swift creatively—and being someone Swift could direct—as “wonderful.”

That also explains why the collaboration feels less like conventional celebrity casting and more like Swift bringing actors she trusts into a particularly cinematic project.

Patient Zero has serious filmmaking talent behind it

The 13-second first look at Patient Zero revealed Johnson and Farrell alongside Swift in a series of deliberately cryptic images, including a gravesite, water imagery and darker interior scenes. The teaser has offered almost no explanation of who Johnson and Farrell are playing.

But the talent behind the camera suggests Swift is treating the video on a larger scale than a standard performance promo.

Academy Award-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, known for Birdman, Gravity and The Revenant, shot the video. CBS and MTV have officially confirmed Swift as director, with Johnson and Farrell as its featured stars.

The full video will make its world premiere during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27, where Swift is also set to receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors.

Johnson arrives as Swift expands the Showgirl era

“Patient Zero” is one of four new tracks added to The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, alongside “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon.” The expanded album arrived on September 25 after Swift said the additional songs grew out of another writing session with Max Martin and Shellback.

That makes Johnson’s appearance more than a quick cameo attached to an old album cycle. Swift is using Patient Zero as the centerpiece of a new extension of the Showgirl era, complete with a high-profile VMA premiere and feature-film-level cinematography.

Exactly what Johnson is doing in the story remains deliberately hidden.

For now, the more interesting detail is how easily she says the project came together. Rather than friendship becoming an obstacle once Swift stepped into the director’s role, Johnson suggests their familiarity actually made the creative process easier.

Sometimes, apparently, working with your friends is a very good idea.
