After nearly nine years of global fandom, binge marathons, and endless theories, Stranger Things is finally stepping into the last chapter of its story. Netflix drops the first four episodes of the fifth and final season on November 26, setting the stage for an epic, all-or-nothing fight against Vecna and the horrors spilling out of the Upside Down.
The stakes have never been higher, the emotional weight has never been heavier, and Hawkins is now more war zone than small town. With the endgame officially under way, here’s a reshuffled, big-picture look at how the final season could play out — and who might not make it home.
The Upside Down: A World That Won’t Go Quietly
At the end of Season 4, the borders between Hawkins and the Upside Down tore open, merging the two worlds and leaving the town locked under a dark, spreading shadow. With Vecna gaining strength and the Demogorgon army multiplying, it’s clear the threat won’t simply vanish.
The most likely outcome? Someone — maybe more than one person — will need to remain inside the Upside Down permanently to contain whatever’s left of the darkness. And that sacrifice will shape the series’ final emotional blow.
The Byers: Will’s Destiny Comes Full Circle
Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) started the series as the boy who vanished. Now, he may be the boy who chooses to stay. His deep connection to Vecna places him at the story’s emotional center again.
Season 4 hinted at Will’s internal battles — with his identity, his feelings for Mike, and the trauma Vecna left behind. The finale could see him embrace that connection head-on, even if it means giving up the life he fought so hard to reclaim.
Jonathan learning to let Will go would be major character growth, and Joyce Byers facing the choice of protecting her son or letting him become a hero would strike at the heart of the show’s family themes.
Eleven, Hopper & the Heart of the Show
If Will ends up in the Upside Down, it’s hard to imagine Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) letting him face it alone. She knows that world better than anyone — and she knows what it means to be trapped in it. The two sharing the responsibility of rebuilding or containing the Upside Down is poetic and hopeful in a dark, Stranger Things way.
As for Hopper (David Harbour), the man has cheated death once and survived a Russian prison. It’s time he gets a peaceful ending — preferably with Joyce — instead of another tragedy.
The Wheelers: Mike, Nancy and the Fight Ahead
Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) might face the emotional cost of growing up — learning that love sometimes means letting people go. But the show won’t cut off his connection to Will and Eleven completely.
The wild card is Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer). Having been the one to uncover Vecna’s identity, she feels destined to land the final blow. Her story arc has always leaned toward fearlessness, and it wouldn’t be surprising if she delivers the kill shot that ends Vecna for good.
Steve & Dustin: A Friendship Too Precious to Break
If anyone’s death would shatter the fandom, it’s Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) — which is exactly why it feels possible. Steve has grown season after season, evolving from high school jock to the show’s most beloved protector.
A final heroic sacrifice would fit his arc, but let’s hope the Duffers spare him.
Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), on the other hand, is safe. Absolutely safe. The Hellfire Club needs a leader post-apocalypse, and he’s the one for the job.
Lucas & Max: Trauma, Hope and One Final Stand
Max (Sadie Sink) barely escaped Vecna in Season 4. Whether she fully recovers or not, she feels destined for one last confrontation with him. Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) will be right there with her — grounding her, protecting her, and symbolizing the hope she desperately needs.
Against the odds, these two might actually get a bittersweet, hopeful ending.
Everyone Else: The Quick Predictions
- Erica (Priah Ferguson): Lives. And plays a vital role in Vecna’s defeat.
- Robin (Maya Hawke): Also lives — and maybe inherits Scoops Ahoy.
- Murray (Brett Gelman): Possible heroic death to protect Nancy and Jonathan.
- Karen & Ted Wheeler: They will appear. They always do.
