From supporting appearances to suddenly becoming one of the most talked-about villains in Indian cinema, the actor’s comeback story honestly feels bigger than many expected. While films like Race 3 and the hit web series Aashram slowly pushed him back into the spotlight, it was clearly Animal that completely shifted the momentum in his favour. The film not only made Bobby trend across social media again, but it also opened doors to huge pan-India projects almost immediately after release.
But interestingly, Bobby recently shared that his father, veteran star Dharmendra, wasn’t entirely convinced when he heard his son was playing the antagonist in Animal. During his appearance on Shekhar Suman’s talk show Shekhar Tonite, Bobby recalled how his father reacted with surprise after learning about the role. According to the actor, Dharmendra simply asked him, “Tu villain hai?” and Bobby had to explain that even though it was a negative role, the character itself was powerful and important to the story. That small family moment honestly says a lot about how unusual the role felt at the time, especially for an actor audiences had traditionally seen in softer or heroic parts.
How ‘Animal’ Changed Bobby Deol’s Career Again
Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Animal starred Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role, while Bobby appeared as the violent and mysterious Abrar Haque. Even though Bobby’s screen time in the film was limited, audiences ended up talking about his character for weeks after release. His silent entry sequence, aggressive screen presence, and brutal confrontation scenes became some of the film’s most discussed moments online. It’s honestly rare when an actor appears for such a short duration and still manages to leave that kind of impact on viewers.
Bobby also revealed during the interview that Sandeep Reddy Vanga first noticed him because of a viral photograph from a sporting event. The director apparently saw Bobby’s intense expression in that picture and immediately felt he was perfect for Abrar’s role. That random internet moment basically changed the direction of Bobby’s career all over again. After Animal crossed more than ₹900 crore globally and became one of the biggest Hindi films of the year, Bobby suddenly became one of the busiest actors around, especially for dark and intimidating characters.
Bobby Deol’s Big Pan-India Phase Continues
Following the success of Animal, Bobby quickly became a regular face in large-scale commercial projects across multiple industries. He appeared in films like Kanguva, Daaku Maharaj, and Hari Hara Veera Mallu, mostly continuing his intense villain image. While Kanguva struggled badly at the box office, the other projects managed to perform much better and kept Bobby’s post-Animal momentum alive. The actor also joined Aryan Khan’s much-discussed series The Ba***ds of Bollywood, which has already generated strong curiosity because of its Bollywood backdrop.
Looking ahead, Bobby’s lineup still looks packed. He is expected to appear in Anurag Kashyap’s Bandar and will also be seen in Yash Raj Films’ spy universe project Alpha alongside Alia Bhatt and Sharvari. On top of that, he is returning to Tamil cinema with Jana Nayagan, which is expected to be Vijay’s final film before entering politics full-time.
