Irrfan Khan’s absence still feels unreal. Years after his passing, stories from his final days continue to remind fans why he remains one of Indian cinema’s most respected and deeply loved actors. Now, a moving account from the sets of Angrezi Medium has once again highlighted the quiet strength and dedication Irrfan carried till the very end.

The actor’s last on-screen appearance came in Homi Adajania’s Angrezi Medium, and according to a member of the film’s team, finishing the film was far from easy for him.

‘He Was in a Lot of Pain’

Costume designer Smriti Chauhan, who worked closely with Irrfan on Angrezi Medium, recently opened up about his condition during the shoot. Speaking on a YouTube interview, she revealed that Irrfan was battling severe physical discomfort while continuing to honour his professional commitment.

She recalled that Irrfan often spoke about feeling extremely cold and requested warmers from a specific brand in London. Despite multiple clothing layers, his weakening health meant additional padding had to be added to his costumes just to keep him comfortable.

According to Smriti, his physical state visibly changed during the shoot, with his body growing frailer as filming progressed.

Shooting Through Struggle

Smriti shared that even summer sequences required Irrfan to wear padded vests beneath his clothes. There were days when shooting had to be halted entirely because he was simply unable to reach the set, despite trying his best.

She added that Irrfan’s family was constantly around him, supporting him through moments when the pain became overwhelming. At times, he had to step away mid-shoot because his body couldn’t cope anymore.

Yet, despite everything, Irrfan remained mentally committed to the film.

‘This Is What I Live For’

Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of Smriti’s recollection was her belief that Irrfan felt acting was his purpose. She suggested that he saw finishing the film as something deeply personal — almost spiritual.

In her words, it felt like Irrfan wanted to give everything he had left to the work he loved most. And in many ways, he did.

A Final Gift to Cinema

Angrezi Medium, also starring Radhika Madan, Kareena Kapoor, Deepak Dobriyal, and Ranvir Shorey, released in 2020. It was a sequel to Hindi Medium and unknowingly became a farewell to one of Indian cinema’s finest performers.

Irrfan Khan passed away in April 2020, leaving behind a legacy defined not just by talent, but by humility, sincerity, and unmatched dedication.

Final Words

Stories like these don’t just speak of pain — they speak of passion. Irrfan Khan didn’t just act; he lived his craft. Even in his weakest moments, he chose commitment over comfort, leaving behind a final performance shaped by courage, grace, and quiet resilience.

That, perhaps, is why he still lives on — not just on screen, but in the hearts of millions.
