Sushmita Sen — Miss Universe 1994, actor, entrepreneur and one of Bollywood’s most inspiring voices — continues to be a symbol of strength for millions. A proud single mother to Renee and Alisah, she has never shied away from speaking openly about parenthood, womanhood, and resilience.
In a recent conversation with Divya Jain, Founder of Safeducate, Sushmita spoke candidly about suffering a heart attack in February 2023, her mindset during recovery, and why she rushed back to the sets of Aarya, her hit crime-thriller series.
“I Only Know How to Keep Going” – Sushmita on Life After the Heart Attack
Reflecting on the incident, Sushmita revealed that she was fully conscious through the heart attack — a moment that changed her perspective on life.
“When you suffer a heart attack and you are conscious through it, you know exactly how close you came to being on the other side of life,” she shared.
She added that surviving it made her realise there was no point in dwelling on fear or sorrow.
“I only know how to keep going. Everything is transient,” she said, explaining how the experience strengthened her belief in moving forward, no matter what.
She Stayed Awake During the Stent Procedure
In a revelation that left many stunned, Sushmita said she refused anaesthesia during the stent placement. The procedure — meant to open a blocked artery and restore blood flow — was done while she stayed fully conscious and even spoke to her doctors.
“I don’t like losing consciousness. It’s one of the reasons I survived,” she said.
Racing Against Time to Return to ‘Aarya’
At the time of her heart attack, Sushmita was in the middle of shooting Aarya in Jaipur.
She knew that halting production meant hundreds of daily-wage crew members would be affected, and that responsibility weighed heavily on her.
“My entire crew was waiting in Jaipur,” she revealed.
“I was the show’s headline. If I didn’t return, the shoot wouldn’t move.”
Despite her determination, doctors advised her to rest — and she returned to the set only after 15 days, following strict medical guidance. Even then, her comeback became a moment of inspiration across the industry.
Where Sushmita Is Today
Sushmita Sen is now healthy, strong, and continuing to inspire fans with her resilience. She was last seen in Aarya Season 3, which released in late 2024.
Whether it’s her journey as a single mother, her fearless honesty, or her refusal to let circumstances define her, Sushmita remains one of the most powerful voices in Indian entertainment.
