Patrick Stewart will make his final on-screen appearance as Professor Charles Xavier in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The confirmation comes following the legendary actor’s death at the age of 86 on October 28, 2026. Marvel Studios paid an emotional tribute to Stewart, acknowledging his contribution to the X-Men franchise and confirming that the December superhero blockbuster will mark the end of his journey as the iconic mutant leader.
For fans who have followed Stewart’s portrayal of Professor X for more than 25 years, his appearance in Avengers: Doomsday now carries a much deeper emotional significance. The actor filmed his return before his death, making the upcoming Marvel film his final opportunity to appear as the character on the big screen.
Marvel Studios Confirms Patrick Stewart’s Final Appearance
In its tribute, Marvel Studios remembered Stewart for bringing Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace and humanity. The studio also acknowledged how his performance helped define the character for generations of superhero audiences.
“All of us at Marvel Studios are deeply saddened by the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart. Sir Patrick brought Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans, from ‘X-Men’ to ‘Logan’ to ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ He was a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman.”
Marvel’s statement also extended condolences to Stewart’s wife Sunny, his children, friends and fans around the world.
The confirmation makes Avengers: Doomsday particularly significant for the original X-Men audience. Stewart’s Professor X has been one of the franchise’s most recognisable characters since the first X-Men movie arrived in 2000.
Patrick Stewart’s 26-Year Journey as Professor X
Stewart first portrayed Charles Xavier in Bryan Singer’s X-Men (2000), introducing audiences to the powerful telepath and founder of the mutant superhero team. His performance became one of the defining elements of the original film series, particularly through his complicated relationship with Ian McKellen’s Magneto.
He subsequently returned in X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Logan. He also made a surprise appearance as an alternate-universe Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).
Avengers: Doomsday will mark his ninth big-screen appearance as Charles Xavier. Interestingly, Ian McKellen is also returning as Magneto, bringing two of the original franchise’s most recognisable performers together again.
Patrick Stewart Never Wanted to Retire From Acting
In one of his final interviews, published by TV Insider in July 2026, Stewart discussed his return as Professor X and his continuing passion for acting.
“I can’t imagine ever officially retiring. I’ll always and forever be an actor,” he said.
The statement now carries additional emotional weight following his passing. Stewart’s career extended well beyond the X-Men films, with his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation earning him another generation of devoted fans.
When Will Avengers: Doomsday Release?
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday features a major ensemble cast, including Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Anthony Mackie and several returning X-Men performers.
The film is scheduled to release in Indian theatres on December 17, 2026, followed by its US release on December 18. Stewart’s final appearance as Professor X will give the film an emotional connection beyond its larger Marvel storyline, serving as a farewell to an actor whose portrayal helped establish the cinematic identity of the X-Men.
