Jamie Dornan knows he has big shoes to fill as he takes over the role of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The actor has acknowledged the pressure of following Viggo Mortensen’s celebrated performance, making it clear that he intends to honour the character’s legacy rather than compete with his predecessor.
In an interview with L’Officiel, Dornan discussed stepping into one of fantasy cinema’s most recognisable roles. Mortensen played Aragorn throughout Peter Jackson’s original The Lord of the Rings trilogy, earning a lasting place in the hearts of fans.
“There’s pressure when you’re trying to follow in those footsteps,” Dornan said. “I’ve been asked to play a super iconic role, and I’ll do my best.”
The actor also made his admiration for Mortensen clear, explaining that he does not view the casting as an opportunity to surpass the original performance.
“But for me, Aragorn will always be just Viggo. His performance is one of my all-time favourites, and I feel honoured to try to recapture at least some of the energy he originally brought to the character. There’s no part of me that’s trying to outdo him,” Dornan added.
Jamie Dornan Takes on a Younger Aragorn
Dornan’s casting in The Hunt for Gollum represents a new chapter for the character, rather than a direct replacement in the events fans already know. The upcoming film takes place between The Hobbit trilogy and The Fellowship of the Ring, when Aragorn is still known as Strider, a ranger travelling through Middle-earth.
The story follows Aragorn as he searches for Gollum, helping Gandalf uncover information about the creature and the One Ring before Sauron can exploit it.
Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the earlier films, is directing the new instalment and will reprise his role. The returning cast also includes Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins and Lee Pace as Thranduil. New additions include Kate Winslet, Anya Taylor-Joy and Leo Woodall.
Viggo Mortensen’s Legacy Remains Central
Mortensen’s portrayal of Aragorn helped define the character for a generation of moviegoers. Dornan’s comments suggest he understands that the role comes with expectations that extend beyond simply resembling the earlier version.
Rather than promising a reinvention, he has expressed a desire to capture some of the qualities that made Mortensen’s performance memorable while bringing his own interpretation to a younger stage of Aragorn’s journey.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 17, 2027. With Serkis directing and several familiar faces returning, the film aims to revisit Middle-earth while introducing audiences to a different chapter in Aragorn’s life.
