Rumours surrounding Farhan Akhtar’s alleged exit from Lalkaara have been circulating for days, but the actor-filmmaker has now firmly dismissed the speculation. Responding to reports claiming he had walked away from Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming sports drama starring Aamir Khan, Farhan clarified that he was never officially attached to the project in the first place. His response also offered a reminder that not every film discussed in industry circles reaches the stage of a formal commitment.
Lalkaara, inspired by the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test cricket series, remains one of the most anticipated sports dramas currently in development. While Farhan’s production house, Excel Entertainment, is backing the film alongside Ritesh Sidhwani, the actor says that doesn’t mean he was ever confirmed as part of its cast.
Farhan Akhtar dismisses the reports
Speaking about the rumours, Farhan made it clear that reports of his departure were based on a false assumption. Without changing his words, he said, “How do I exit a project when I had never even entered it officially?”
He further explained that conversations about potential films are a normal part of every actor’s career and should not be mistaken for official casting announcements. Without altering his statement, Farhan added, “In the course of one’s career trajectory, every actor comes across many offers and projects. You sign some projects, and don’t sign some. It’s as simple as that.”
His comments effectively put an end to speculation suggesting there had been creative differences or scheduling conflicts behind his reported exit. Instead, Farhan indicated that discussions simply never progressed to the point of a formal agreement.
Focus remains on playing Pandit Ravi Shankar
While setting the record straight on Lalkaara, Farhan also spoke about one of the biggest acting challenges of his career. He is set to portray legendary sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar in Sam Mendes’ ambitious four-film project based on the lives of The Beatles. The internationally mounted series of films is currently scheduled for release in April 2028.
Taking on such an influential cultural figure requires complete dedication, and Farhan suggested that role remains his primary focus at the moment. Reports have also linked him to another musical biopic, this time based on legendary composer R.D. Burman, with Neeraj Pandey attached to direct. However, Farhan said it is far too early to discuss that possibility.
Without changing his words, he explained, “Playing one musical icon (Pandit Ravi Shankar) is a huge responsibility. I am completely focused on that. To play another musical icon (R D Burman), I have to get into another mindset, mood and era.”
The potential R.D. Burman project carries additional significance because Farhan’s father, veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar, collaborated with the iconic composer on memorable films including Saagar, Arjun, Betaab, and 1942: A Love Story. Industry reports suggest Neeraj Pandey hopes to involve Javed Akhtar as a creative consultant for the film, although no official announcement has been made.
A busy slate ahead
Beyond his acting commitments, Farhan continues to balance multiple responsibilities as an actor, filmmaker, producer, and writer. Through Excel Entertainment, he remains involved in several high-profile projects across Hindi cinema while also expanding his international presence with Sam Mendes’ Beatles films.
His clarification regarding Lalkaara highlights how early industry discussions often fuel speculation before official announcements are made. For now, Farhan’s attention appears firmly fixed on bringing Pandit Ravi Shankar’s remarkable journey to the screen, while other potential projects remain in the discussion stage.
