Amazon’s live-action adaptation of God of War could soon have a new face leading its cast. According to a new report, Dave Bautista is in negotiations to take over the role of Kratos after a production setback forced the studio to rethink its casting plans. If the deal goes through, the former WWE champion would headline one of Prime Video’s most ambitious video game adaptations, bringing one of gaming’s most recognizable warriors to life.
The reported casting change follows an unexpected delay that reshaped the production schedule. With filming expected to resume later this year, Amazon and Sony appear eager to get the series back on track, and Bautista has emerged as the frontrunner for the iconic role.
Ryan Hurst’s injury changes the casting plan
According to Variety, Dave Bautista is currently in talks to portray Kratos in the upcoming God of War series for Prime Video. The report says Ryan Hurst, who had been cast as the legendary Spartan warrior earlier this year, suffered a torn bicep during production. The injury reportedly would have pushed filming into 2027, leading Amazon MGM Studios and Sony to recast the role instead of waiting for his recovery.
Neither Amazon nor Sony has officially confirmed Bautista’s casting, and representatives for Amazon declined to comment on the report. However, production is reportedly aiming to restart by the fall, making a quick replacement essential for keeping the project on schedule.
For many fans, Bautista’s name immediately feels like a natural fit. Kratos has always been defined by his towering frame, immense physical strength, and intimidating presence, qualities Bautista has consistently brought to action roles throughout his acting career. Kratos struggles to teach Atreus what it means to be a responsible god, while Atreus encourages his father to rediscover compassion after years of violence. That emotional core helped redefine the franchise and is expected to be a major focus of the television adaptation.
Callum Vinson remains attached to portray Atreus, while the supporting cast includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, with Frederick E.O. Toye directing the first two episodes. The series is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios alongside PlayStation Productions.
