After years of dominating India’s streaming landscape, the Mirzapur franchise is preparing for an even bigger expansion. While fans are eagerly waiting for Mirzapur: The Movie to arrive in theatres this September, the creators have quietly started laying the foundation for what comes next. Director Gurmmeet Singh has now confirmed that work on Season 4 is officially underway, although the team is intentionally keeping every major detail under wraps for now.
The filmmaker says the movie currently sits at the heart of the franchise’s future, making it impossible to discuss the next season without revealing important moments from the upcoming film. That approach suggests Prime Video is treating the theatrical release as a major turning point before the story returns to streaming.
Season 4 Is Already Taking Shape
Speaking about the future of the franchise, Gurmmeet Singh confirmed that writing for the next season has already begun. However, he made it clear that fans shouldn’t expect story hints anytime soon because the events of the movie directly connect to what follows afterward.
“The scripting is on. What I can say is it’s being scripted, and we’re really looking forward to that as well.”
According to Singh, every major creative discussion currently revolves around Mirzapur: The Movie. Since the film bridges the gap between the existing series and the next chapter, revealing anything about Season 4 would risk spoiling the cinematic experience. Instead, the makers want audiences to experience the story on the big screen before learning where Guddu Pandit and the rest of Mirzapur’s power players head next.
The film reunites several familiar faces from the franchise, including Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Shweta Tripathi, Rasika Dugal, Vijay Varma, Isha Talwar, and Harshita Gaur. Bringing such a large ensemble back together highlights the scale of the project, which marks one of the most ambitious transitions from an Indian streaming series to a theatrical feature.
Why The Production Timeline Remains Unclear
Although scripting has begun, Singh admitted that production planning is still happening behind closed doors. With one of the industry’s biggest recurring casts, coordinating schedules for every actor requires months of preparation before cameras can start rolling.
“Right now the film is at the center of it, so it’d be very difficult for me to give out how stuff is happening. Currently, all attention is towards the film because this is a very unique thing for us to be able to pull off.”
When asked about a shooting schedule, the director explained that those conversations haven’t reached him yet because the immediate priority is completing the feature film. He added that planning is certainly taking place internally, but the creative team has been encouraged to concentrate on finishing the movie before shifting attention to Season 4.
“I don’t know if I even have that information yet. I’m sure the planning in the back rooms is all on, and they would know because it’s also such a big cast roster. Things need to be planned well in advance. So I guess right now they’re not bothering us with that because they want us to focus on the film. I think closer to when the film is done and handed over, that conversation will pick up speed again.”
This cautious approach isn’t surprising given the franchise’s scale. Since its debut in 2018, Mirzapur has evolved from a crime thriller into one of Prime Video India’s biggest original properties, with multiple interconnected storylines and a massive ensemble cast that demands careful scheduling.
Guddu Pandit’s Dark Journey Will Continue
Singh also confirmed that directing Season 4 will be his next major assignment after wrapping work on Mirzapur: The Movie, reinforcing that the series remains an important long-term project for the creative team.
“Directing Season 4 is what’s in the pipeline.”
The director also reflected on one of Season 3’s most talked-about creative choices: Guddu Pandit’s dramatic transformation. Ali Fazal’s character, once viewed as a revenge-driven hero, ended the previous season in a much darker emotional state, leaving viewers divided over his actions.
“At the end of Season 3, we really wanted to show the downfall of Guddu(Ali Fazal). He almost is the mad king. We took him down a really dark path where actually you can now hate Guddu if you want.”
That statement hints that Guddu’s moral decline will continue to shape the franchise moving forward, although Singh avoided discussing exactly how the character’s story unfolds in the movie or the fourth season.
The decision to release Mirzapur: The Movie before returning with another season also represents an unusual move for the Indian entertainment industry. While international streaming franchises have occasionally expanded into films, very few Indian OTT originals have attempted a theatrical continuation on this scale before heading back to episodic storytelling. If successful, the experiment could influence how future streaming hits evolve beyond traditional seasonal releases.
