Jana Nayagan Faces Fresh Legal Challenge In Madras HC

Just days after Jana Nayagan found itself at the centre of discussions over its A certification, the Vijay-starrer has landed in fresh legal trouble. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has issued notices to director H. Vinoth, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the film’s producer in response to a petition seeking the removal of certain scenes from the movie. While the court has not ordered any changes to the film for now, the case has opened another chapter in the legal scrutiny surrounding one of Tamil cinema’s biggest releases of the year.

The petition comes at a time when Jana Nayagan continues to attract attention both for its box office performance and the conversations surrounding its mature content. With the High Court now seeking replies from all parties involved, the matter is expected to move into a detailed hearing in the coming weeks.

High Court Seeks Replies From Filmmakers And CBFC

According to reports, the petition was heard by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, which directed filmmaker H. Vinoth, the CBFC Chairperson and the producer of Jana Nayagan to submit their responses. The petitioner has challenged certain portions of the film, alleging that they are objectionable and requesting judicial intervention for their removal.

The exact scenes under challenge have not been disclosed in the court proceedings made public so far. However, the plea argues that the contested portions deserve reconsideration despite the film having already received certification from the CBFC before its theatrical release. At this stage, the court has only issued notices and has not expressed any opinion on the merits of the allegations.

The respondents will now be required to explain their position before the court and justify the inclusion of the scenes questioned in the petition. Once those replies are filed, the matter will be taken up for further hearing.

No Interim Order Against The Film

Importantly, the High Court has not passed any interim order directing the removal of scenes or stopping the exhibition of Jana Nayagan. The film continues to remain in theatres, with the proceedings currently limited to seeking responses from the concerned parties.

Legal challenges involving certified films are not uncommon in India. Individuals or organisations sometimes approach courts claiming that specific scenes, dialogues or portrayals hurt religious sentiments, misrepresent historical events or conflict with public interest. While courts generally recognise that a film certified by the CBFC carries a presumption of legality, they also retain the authority to examine complaints in exceptional cases where constitutional or legal issues are raised.

The outcome of the present case will depend on the submissions made by the filmmaker, the producer and the certification body, after which the court will decide whether any further action is required.

Case Follows Recent Controversy Around Screenings

The latest legal development comes shortly after Jana Nayagan made headlines for another reason. Reports stated that several screenings in Chennai faced issues after underage viewers were allegedly found inside cinema halls showing the film.

Jana Nayagan has been awarded an A (Adults Only) certificate by the CBFC because of its mature subject matter, including graphic violence and depictions of sexual assault and child abuse. Under Indian certification rules, only viewers aged 18 years and above are permitted to watch films carrying an A certificate. The reported presence of minors at some screenings raised concerns over compliance with exhibition guidelines, adding to the attention surrounding the film.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan has remained one of the most talked-about Tamil films of the year, with discussions ranging from its performances and storytelling to its certification and now its legal challenges. As the High Court proceedings continue, all eyes will be on the responses filed by the filmmakers and the CBFC before the next hearing.
