For years, actor-turned-politician Vijay carefully kept his personal life away from public discussion. But on Monday, June 15, one of the most talked-about celebrity legal battles in Tamil Nadu returned to the spotlight, even if the courtroom proceedings themselves remained largely uneventful.
The Chengalpattu Mahila Court adjourned the ongoing divorce case involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, setting the next hearing for August 7. Both parties appeared before the court in person, complying with earlier directions issued by the judge after skipping a previous hearing. However, despite their presence, no breakthrough, settlement, or major decision emerged from the brief session.
The latest hearing has once again drawn attention to the serious allegations detailed in Sangeetha’s petition, bringing a deeply personal dispute into public conversation.
Court Appearance Brings No Immediate Resolution
According to reports by India Today, the hearing began around 10:30 AM at the Chengalpattu Mahila Court. Vijay and Sangeetha attended the proceedings as instructed after the court had earlier rejected requests seeking virtual appearances. Lawyers representing both sides had reportedly cited security and logistical concerns due to the couple’s high-profile status, but the court insisted on physical attendance.
Monday’s proceedings ended without any significant developments. No interim orders were passed, and no indication was given regarding a possible settlement between the estranged couple. The court instead chose to adjourn the matter, with the case now expected to resume on August 7.
The hearing itself may have been quiet, but the allegations contained in the divorce petition continue to generate intense public interest. Given Vijay’s transition from cinema superstar to political figure, the case has attracted attention beyond entertainment circles.
Allegations Detailed in the Divorce Petition
Sangeetha Sornalingam has filed for divorce under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, seeking to formally end a marriage that has lasted nearly 27 years. It is important to note that the claims outlined in the petition are allegations made by Sangeetha and have not been proven in court.
According to the filing, Sangeetha alleges adultery and cruelty on Vijay’s part. The petition claims that in April 2021, she became aware of an alleged relationship between Vijay and an unnamed actress. While the actress is not identified in the legal documents, public speculation has often linked Vijay with actress Trisha Krishnan because of repeated rumours surrounding the pair over the years.
The petition further alleges that despite assurances that the relationship would end, Vijay allegedly continued appearing publicly and travelling with the actress. Sangeetha claims that photographs from such outings surfaced regularly on social media, causing humiliation and emotional pain not only to her but also to their children.
Additional allegations paint a picture of a marriage that had allegedly deteriorated over time. The filing accuses Vijay of emotional withdrawal and verbal disdain, while invoking the legal principle of “constructive desertion.” According to the petition, Sangeetha felt increasingly isolated within the marriage and claims that Vijay prioritised his public and political commitments over family life.
The petition also raises allegations relating to financial control. Sangeetha claims that restrictions were imposed on household finances, movement, and access to routine domestic facilities. These allegations remain part of the ongoing legal proceedings and await examination before the court.
Attempts to Save the Marriage Allegedly Failed
The legal documents suggest that efforts were made to salvage the relationship before divorce proceedings formally began. Sangeetha reportedly attempted reconciliation through legal notices as well as private discussions between August 2024 and February 2025.
According to the petition, the couple’s final meeting took place on November 9, 2025. However, those discussions allegedly failed to bridge the differences between them. Sangeetha states in the filing that the marriage has broken down beyond repair and now survives only in legal records.
Whether future hearings open a path toward reconciliation or lead to a formal dissolution of the marriage remains uncertain. For now, both sides appear prepared to let the legal process take its course.
A Relationship That Once Captured Fans’ Hearts
Long before courtrooms and political responsibilities entered the picture, Vijay and Sangeetha’s relationship was often viewed as one of Tamil cinema’s enduring love stories. Sangeetha, who was living in London at the time, reportedly became an admirer of Vijay after watching his 1996 blockbuster Poove Unakkaga.
Their friendship gradually evolved into a relationship, eventually leading to marriage. The couple legally registered their union in the United Kingdom in 1998 before holding a traditional wedding ceremony in Chennai in 1999. The event drew enormous public attention, with fans gathering in large numbers to celebrate the actor’s big day.
Together, they built a family away from the glare of constant media attention. They are parents to two children — son Jason Sanjay, born in 2000, and daughter Divya Sasha, born in 2005.
As the case moves toward its next hearing in August, what was once considered one of Tamil cinema’s most stable marriages now finds itself at a difficult crossroads. Until the court examines the claims and evidence presented by both sides, many of the questions surrounding this high-profile separation are likely to remain unanswered.
