Just days before its theatrical release, Cocktail 2 has landed a certification that could further fuel curiosity around the film. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has granted the romantic drama an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate, signalling that audiences may be in for a more mature take on relationships compared to what mainstream Bollywood romances usually offer.
Directed by Homi Adajania, the film arrives in cinemas on June 19 and serves as a spiritual successor to the much-loved 2012 hit Cocktail. While the original became a pop-culture favourite for its modern relationship dynamics, stylish storytelling, and chartbuster soundtrack, the sequel is taking a different route with an entirely new cast and story.
Headlined by Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna, Cocktail 2 is already drawing attention for its love triangle premise. Now, its adult certification has added another talking point ahead of release.
Longer Than the Original, But With a Fresh Story
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, Cocktail 2 has a runtime of 150 minutes, making it two hours and thirty minutes long. Interestingly, that places it just four minutes ahead of the original Cocktail, which had a duration of 146 minutes.
Although Homi Adajania returns to direct and Dinesh Vijan is back as producer, audiences shouldn’t expect a direct continuation of Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty’s story.
Instead, the sequel introduces a completely new set of characters while retaining the emotional chaos and complicated romantic equations that defined the original.
The 2012 film remains one of Bollywood’s most remembered urban relationship dramas. Deepika Padukone’s Veronica, in particular, became a standout character, while songs like Tum Hi Ho Bandhu and Second Hand Jawaani continue to enjoy popularity even today.
That legacy naturally comes with expectations, and fans are curious to see whether the sequel can create a similar cultural impact with a new generation of stars.
A Career First for Kriti Sanon
The CBFC’s decision also marks an interesting milestone for each member of the lead cast.
For Kriti Sanon, Cocktail 2 represents uncharted territory.
The actress has largely built her Bollywood journey through films that appealed to wider family audiences. From Heropanti and Bareilly Ki Barfi to Mimi and last year’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, Kriti’s filmography has mostly avoided adult certifications.
That changes with Cocktail 2, making it the first ‘A’-rated film of her career.
Given Kriti’s increasing willingness to explore different genres and character dynamics, many fans see this as another step in her evolution as an actor choosing more varied roles.
Shahid Kapoor Leads the Experience Chart
While the certification is new territory for Kriti, Shahid Kapoor is no stranger to adult-rated cinema.
In fact, Cocktail 2 becomes the fifth ‘A’-certified film in Shahid’s career.
The actor previously headlined films like Kaminey (2009), Udta Punjab (2016), Kabir Singh (2019), and O’ Romeo (2026), all of which carried adult ratings for their mature themes, language, or intense content.
What’s particularly notable is that this is the first time Shahid has delivered two adult-certified releases back-to-back, following the release of O’ Romeo earlier this year.
For an actor who has consistently shifted between romantic heroes, intense dramas, and experimental roles, the latest milestone further highlights his willingness to embrace stories targeted at mature audiences.
Meanwhile, Rashmika Mandanna finds herself somewhere in between.
Rashmika Returns to Familiar Territory
For Rashmika Mandanna, Cocktail 2 marks her second Hindi film with an ‘A’ certificate.
The actress previously featured in Animal, which emerged as one of the biggest box-office successes of 2023 despite sparking heated debates around its portrayal of masculinity, relationships, and violence.
The success of Animal significantly expanded Rashmika’s reach among Hindi audiences. With Cocktail 2, she once again enters a project aimed at older viewers, though this time within the framework of a romantic drama rather than an action-heavy narrative.
The combination of Shahid, Kriti, and Rashmika has already generated considerable buzz, especially among younger audiences drawn to films exploring messy emotions and unconventional relationships.
Homi Adajania Clears the Air on Lesbian Romance Rumours
In the lead-up to the film’s release, another rumour had begun circulating online.
Following the trailer launch, speculation emerged that Cocktail 2 might involve a lesbian romance angle between Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna’s characters.
Director Homi Adajania addressed the chatter directly and clarified how the misunderstanding began.
“This is where the rumour came from. We were all sitting on the set. They definitely get a little cuddly with each other because they are friends. And we just hypothetically thought, what if the story was about them and Shahid was the third wheel? And I said I wouldn’t mind making a movie like that.”
His remarks made it clear that while the idea was casually discussed during production, it isn’t the story audiences will see on screen.
Instead, the film revolves around a more traditional yet emotionally tangled setup.
At its heart lies a love triangle where Shahid Kapoor’s character finds himself torn between two women, forcing choices that could reshape all three of their lives.
Can Cocktail 2 Live Up to the Original’s Legacy?
Sequels to beloved films often carry a unique burden.
They must honour the emotional memory attached to the original while convincing audiences that there’s a fresh story worth telling. Cocktail 2 faces exactly that challenge.
The first film resonated because it captured the complexities of friendship, heartbreak, commitment, and modern love without pretending that relationships always fit into neat boxes. It also benefited from memorable performances and one of the strongest soundtracks of its era.
Now, with a mature certification, a fresh cast, and a contemporary love story at its centre, Cocktail 2 appears ready to carve out its own identity rather than recreate what came before.
Whether the gamble pays off will become clear when audiences finally step into theatres on June 19. Until then, the film’s ‘A’ certificate has only added to the intrigue surrounding one of Bollywood’s most talked-about romantic releases of the month.
