Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated The X-Files reboot is officially moving forward at Hulu. The streaming platform announced on October 13, 2026, that it has ordered the project to series, bringing the iconic science-fiction franchise one step closer to its television return.
The new series will star Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two FBI agents investigating unexplained phenomena. Coogler, whose credits include Sinners, Black Panther and Creed, wrote and directed the pilot, which Hulu initially commissioned in February 2026.
What Is Ryan Coogler’s X-Files Reboot About?
According to the official synopsis, the reboot follows two accomplished but contrasting FBI agents who develop an unlikely partnership after being assigned to a long-shuttered division investigating mysterious cases.
Importantly, Deadwyler and Patel will portray entirely new characters, rather than younger versions of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
The actors previously appeared together in HBO’s Station Eleven, making this a reunion with a supernatural twist.
Coogler expressed his excitement about bringing the franchise back.
“I’ve loved ‘The X-Files’ for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” he said in the announcement.
Will Mulder and Scully Return?
The original series, created by Chris Carter, starred David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully.
Although Carter is returning as an executive producer, neither Duchovny nor Anderson has been officially announced as part of the reboot’s cast.
Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner, with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian also executive producing. Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson created the pilot’s score.
When Will The X-Files Reboot Premiere?
Hulu has not announced a premiere date or episode count.
The original X-Files ran for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002 before returning for two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018. It also spawned two theatrical films.
Rather than recreating Mulder and Scully’s partnership, Coogler’s version introduces new investigators while retaining the franchise’s central fascination with unexplained mysteries.
With the pilot officially receiving a series order, the next announcements should clarify the production schedule and release window.
