Netflix Orders Bridgerton Spinoff About Young Lady Violet

Netflix is expanding the Bridgerton universe with another romantic prequel, this time placing Lady Violet Bridgerton at the centre of the story. The streaming giant and Shondaland officially announced a new limited series on October 8, 2026, exploring Violet’s younger years and her relationship with her future husband, Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The project will reunite several creative figures behind Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, although its cast and release date have not yet been announced.

Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will serve as co-showrunners, writers and executive producers of the untitled series. Tom Verica, who previously worked on both Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte, is attached to direct and executive produce, while longtime Shondaland collaborator Betsy Beers will also executive produce.

According to Netflix’s official announcement, the series will chronicle Violet’s early life and explore how she fell in love with Edmund, the future father of the eight Bridgerton siblings. Rather than introducing another romance involving one of those children, the spinoff will revisit the relationship that shaped the family’s understanding of love and marriage.

Lady Violet and Edmund’s romance finally gets its own story

Lady Violet has been one of Bridgerton’s most consistent characters since the series premiered in 2020. Played by Ruth Gemmell, she is the widowed matriarch who frequently encourages her children to find genuine affection rather than accept marriages based entirely on social position or financial security.

That philosophy comes directly from her own marriage. Violet has repeatedly spoken about the love she shared with Edmund, whose death left her raising their eight children. His absence continues to influence the family, particularly Anthony Bridgerton, who inherited the responsibilities of becoming Viscount after losing his father.

Viewers already know that Edmund died after suffering a fatal allergic reaction to a bee sting. His death, explored through flashbacks in Season 2, deeply affected Anthony and influenced his initially guarded attitude toward romantic relationships.

The upcoming prequel offers an opportunity to explore the happier years before that tragedy. Rather than focusing on Violet primarily as a mother guiding her children through London’s marriage market, the story will introduce her as a young woman discovering love for herself.

That change in perspective gives the project an interesting emotional foundation. Audiences know how Violet and Edmund’s relationship eventually ends, but they have seen relatively little of how it began. The new series can explore their courtship without depending on the mystery of whether they ultimately marry.

It also provides a chance to develop Edmund as a character beyond the loving husband and father remembered by his family.

Will Ruth Gemmell or Connie Jenkins-Greig return?

Although the creative team has been confirmed, Netflix has not announced who will portray the younger versions of Violet and Edmund.

Ruth Gemmell currently plays Lady Violet in the main series, while Connie Jenkins-Greig previously portrayed teenage Violet Ledger in the 2023 prequel Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. That appearance introduced audiences to Violet before her marriage and explored her relationship with her father, Lord Ledger, and the younger Lady Danbury.

Jenkins-Greig’s earlier casting creates an obvious connection between the two prequels, but Netflix has not confirmed whether she will reprise the role. Similarly, there is no official word on whether Gemmell will appear as an older Violet through flash-forwards or a separate storyline.

The distinction is important because Queen Charlotte moved between two timelines, using the younger characters’ experiences to illuminate relationships audiences already knew from the main series. The Lady Violet spinoff could employ a similar structure, but no such approach has been announced.

What is confirmed is the return of Rhimes, whose involvement provides continuity with Queen Charlotte. The 2023 limited series explored the early romance between Queen Charlotte and King George while expanding the histories of Lady Danbury and Violet.

Its success demonstrated that Bridgerton could explore earlier generations without relying entirely on the eight siblings who lead Julia Quinn’s original romance novels.
