A serious development has shaken the Malayalam film industry, with filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan being arrested following allegations of sexual assault made by an actress. The director was produced before a magistrate court in Kochi and has now been remanded to custody as the investigation moves forward.

According to officials, the case began after the actress filed a formal complaint, leading to an FIR being registered on March 28. The allegations stem from an incident that reportedly took place during a film shoot, where she accused Ranjith of attempting to sexually assault her inside a caravan on set.

Police action followed swiftly but quietly.

Authorities took Ranjith into custody from Kerala’s Idukki district in what they described as a carefully handled operation. After being presented in court, he was initially sent to judicial custody, with a short period of police custody granted for further questioning as investigators continue to piece together the case.

The charges against him are serious and span multiple sections, including sexual assault, outraging the modesty of a woman, wrongful confinement, and inappropriate conduct. Investigators have indicated that the arrest was not based solely on the complaint, but also on additional evidence collected during the preliminary probe.

Speaking on the process, Deputy Commissioner of Police Aswathy Gigi confirmed that the case moved forward only after authorities were reasonably convinced of the allegations. A Special Investigation Team has now been formed to handle the case, signaling that the probe is being treated with priority.

What’s also added another layer to the situation is the legal controversy surrounding the defense. Advocate Mohammed Siyad, who was initially representing Ranjith, faced criticism due to his association with the Internal Complaints Committee linked to the same film set where the alleged incident occurred. Following the backlash, he has stepped away from the case.

Meanwhile, Ranjith’s legal team is preparing to move a bail plea in court, which could be the next major development in the case.

This incident comes at a time when conversations around workplace safety in the film industry are already under scrutiny. Cases like these often extend beyond individual allegations, raising broader questions about on-set protocols, accountability, and how complaints are handled within production environments.

For now, the investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to continue questioning during the custody period. As the legal process unfolds, the focus will remain on how the case is examined and what evidence ultimately emerges.
