Akhanda 2 Gets a Three-Day Ticket Hike in Telangana, But Madras HC Stay Throws Release Plans Into Chaos

Just a day before Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Akhanda 2 was supposed to roar into theatres, the film finds itself caught between last-minute financial support and a sudden legal blockade. The Telangana government has approved a short-term ticket price hike to give the big-budget sequel an opening weekend boost — but a Madras High Court stay has now cast serious uncertainty over its release. The development was first highlighted by 123Telugu.

Ticket Prices Jump, But Only for a Brief Window

While Andhra Pradesh granted a full 10-day hike for the film, Telangana has kept the increase conservative, limiting the revised rates to just the first three days. It’s a strategic but short-lived move aimed at capitalizing on Balakrishna’s massive fan base, especially across the opening weekend.

Under the revised structure:

  • Premiere shows: ₹600
  • Single screens: ₹227 (₹50 increase including GST)
  • Multiplexes: ₹395 (₹100 increase including GST)

Once the weekend rush cools down, tickets will revert to standard pricing so general audiences can watch the film at regular rates.

A Portion of the Hike Must Support Artists

In an interesting addition, the Telangana government has made the hike conditional. Twenty percent of the additional revenue must be passed on to the Movie Artists’ Welfare Association, ensuring that actors and industry workers benefit directly from the surge in ticket sales.

Legal Trouble Blocks the Release at the Last Minute

Even as early shows were being planned, Akhanda 2 hit an unexpected roadblock. The Madras High Court has issued a stay, halting all forms of release — theatrical, digital, or satellite — until an old financial dispute is settled.

Eros International Media Limited appealed to the court, citing a previous arbitration ruling that awarded them around ₹28 crore plus 14% interest. According to CinemaExpress reports referenced widely in regional media, Eros argued that the film’s production house, 14 Reels Plus LLP, is effectively a continuation of 14 Reels Entertainment. Their concern: the makers could profit from the sequel while bypassing pending liabilities.

The court agreed, ordering that Akhanda 2 cannot be released until dues are fully paid.

Fans Celebrate, Then Panic as Uncertainty Spikes

Balakrishna’s fans had already been gearing up for massive celebrations — some even purchasing first-day-first-show tickets at eye-watering prices abroad. In Germany, one devoted fan spent nearly ₹1 lakh for the privilege of securing the first ticket, underscoring the sequel’s hype.

Now, with the stay order in place, the big question is whether the film will hit screens as scheduled or face an indefinite delay.

The Film: A Sequel Powered by Massive Expectations

Directed by Boyapati Srinu, Akhanda 2 continues the story that made the 2021 original a blockbuster across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Balakrishna returns in his larger-than-life avatar, joined by Samyuktha, with music by Thaman — whose jukebox has already attracted strong response.

The film has completed all censorship formalities and was positioned as one of the biggest Telugu releases of December. But until the financial dispute is resolved, its fate hangs in balance.

Final Words

Akhanda 2 was primed for a thunderous opening, bolstered by a short-term ticket hike and sky-high fan anticipation. But the Madras High Court’s stay has abruptly shifted the narrative, leaving exhibitors, fans and the production team waiting for clarity. If the legal hurdle is cleared quickly, the sequel could still cash in on its momentum — but for now, the release that fans counted down to is stuck on pause.
