Tere Ishk Mein Review: Dhanush & Kriti Sanon Deliver a Turbulent, Intoxicating Love Story That Hits Hard Despite Its Flaws

Aanand L Rai returns to the universe of messy, overwhelming love with Tere Ishk Mein, but this time he flips the lens. If Raanjhanaa gave us a lovestruck boy spiraling into obsession, this spiritual sibling explores what happens when the chaos comes from the other side — when the woman’s intensity begins to shape, shake, and eventually shatter the man at the center of it all.

A Universe of Obsession, But Told Differently

With Kabir Singh, Animal, and even Saiyaara pushing the portrayal of complicated love into more aggressive territory, Tere Ishk Mein arrives with its own brand of emotional volatility. And in a refreshing shift, the person who carries the obsessive weight here is Mukti — played by Kriti Sanon — not the brooding male lead.

That unexpected inversion gives the film its first jolt.

The Story: When Love Becomes a Mirror to Pain

The narrative follows Shankar, an Air Force pilot grounded for disobedience. As he undergoes psychological evaluation, memories of his past with Mukti resurface — turbulent, warm, destructive, and unforgettable.

What begins as a fiery college romance becomes a bond stitched with reform, rebellion, heartbreak, and guilt. Mukti intends to steer Shankar away from his anger; instead, both are pulled into a love that becomes too consuming to survive cleanly.

A Strong First Half, A Wobbly Middle

Credit where it’s due — writers Himanshu Sharma and Neeraj Yadav craft an engaging first half that keeps you locked in. The world, the mood, the emotional beats — they’re all absorbing.

But as the interval approaches, the screenplay’s grip loosens.
A sudden narrative detour involving a bizarre bet with Mukti’s father throws the momentum off. The second half starts on shaky ground, only recovering when the storytelling returns to the raw, painfully intimate connection between the leads.

Some sequences feel stretched, and a tighter edit would’ve helped contain the emotional noise.

Performances: Dhanush & Kriti Are Fire Together

Dhanush is exceptional. He doesn’t repeat Kundan from Raanjhanaa; he reinvents turbulence with a quieter, more wounded rage. His emotional swings feel real and lived in.

Kriti Sanon matches him beautifully. After her impressive turn in Do Patti, she brings both softness and unpredictability to Mukti — a character that could’ve easily slipped into cliché but doesn’t.

The chemistry? Electric and layered.

Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub’s cameo is a nostalgic nod to Raanjhanaa, while Prakash Raj brings gravitas as Shankar’s father.

Music, Mood & Emotional Whiplash

A.R. Rahman’s soundtrack runs like a pulse beneath the film — swelling, thinning, rising at the right places. His music carries several emotionally heavy scenes on its shoulders.

The climax, without spoiling anything, pulls the film back to the textured heartbreak of Raanjhanaa — not identical, but similar in the way it leaves you hollow.

Verdict: A Messy, Moving Storm of a Film

Tere Ishk Mein isn’t a perfect movie — far from it. But it has the ability to sweep you up in its emotional storm when it’s firing on all cylinders. It cuts, bruises, and occasionally overwhelms. And when it finally lands, it leaves a lingering ache.

⭐ Rating: 3/5

Final Words

It may be uneven, but its emotional highs soar. At its best, the film demands that you surrender — not judge. Not reason. Just give in. One fragment at a time.
