Vidya Balan and R Balki are finally working together again.
The actor confirmed on September 29 that she has begun work on an untitled Tamil film directed by Balki, marking their first movie together since Paa arrived in 2009. Balan shared the update through Instagram Stories, posting glimpses from what appears to be the early stage of production.
In one image, she sits quietly on a couch with the caption, “A quiet moment before the madness begins.” A second picture shows her holding a script while wearing spectacles and a long braid, accompanied by the more direct announcement: “New Beginnings #NewTamilFilm with #RBalki.”
For now, that is almost everything they are willing to reveal.
The film is already moving into production
Balan’s post confirms two important details: the project is a Tamil film, and work has begun.
The title, storyline, her character, supporting cast and release plans have not been announced. There is also no indication yet whether the movie will be made exclusively in Tamil or eventually released in additional languages.
That secrecy makes the reunion itself the biggest piece of news.
Balki and Balan last collaborated on Paa, where she played Vidya, the mother of Amitabh Bachchan’s Auro, a child living with progeria. Abhishek Bachchan played Auro’s father. The unusual casting became one of the movie’s defining elements.
Balan has since recalled initially believing Balki had “lost it” when he proposed that she play Amitabh Bachchan’s mother. She eventually changed her mind after hearing the script, despite warnings that playing an older maternal role could damage her career.
Seventeen years later, she clearly remains willing to take another unusual pitch from him.
Vidya Balan is having a busy Tamil cinema moment
The timing is particularly interesting because this is not Balan’s only current Tamil project.
She is also part of Nelson Dilipkumar’s Jailer 2, where she plays Kantha opposite Rajinikanth. Sun Pictures officially revealed her character earlier this month, ahead of the sequel’s October 15 theatrical release.
That film already marks Balan’s return to Tamil cinema after a seven-year gap. Her previous Tamil appearance was a cameo in Ajith Kumar’s Nerkonda Paarvai in 2019.
The new Balki movie means that return is no longer limited to one high-profile sequel.
Balan now has another Tamil project in production—this time built around a filmmaker with whom she shares one of the more memorable collaborations of her Hindi-film career.
Why the Paa reunion is worth watching
Balki’s films have often depended on unusual premises and actors playing against expectation, whether in Cheeni Kum, Paa, Ki & Ka or Chup. Balan, meanwhile, has built much of her career around characters that do not fit neatly into conventional star vehicles.
That combination worked unusually well in Paa.
The new film does not need to imitate it, and nothing announced so far suggests the two projects are connected. But their reunion naturally raises expectations because the last time Balki and Balan worked together, the role asked the actor to make a potentially risky career choice.
For now, there is no poster, release date or character name to analyze.
Just a script, a braid, and Balan’s promise of “new beginnings.”
After 17 years, that is enough to make this one worth watching.
