Ryan Gosling is officially stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans finally have confirmation about the role that has fuelled speculation for years. During Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, studio president Kevin Feige revealed that Gosling will lead a standalone Ghost Rider movie, with filmmaker Shawn Levy directing the supernatural adventure. The announcement instantly became one of the biggest highlights of the event, signalling Marvel’s plans to bring one of its darkest comic book heroes back to the big screen.
The reveal also marks another collaboration between Gosling and Levy, who recently worked together on the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter. After their successful partnership, the duo is now shifting from a galaxy far, far away to Marvel’s supernatural corner, with the Ghost Rider film currently slated for a theatrical release in 2028.

Addressing the packed Hall H audience, Shawn Levy reflected on returning to Comic-Con after introducing Deadpool & Wolverine to fans two years earlier. Sharing the stage with Kevin Feige and Ryan Gosling, the director praised the actor and looked back on their time working together before teasing the exciting road ahead.
“I’m having the greatest flashback vibes here, because I was here two years ago when we showed ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’” Levy said. “I’ll never forget that night, because I was introduced to the greatest fans. Gosling is the absolute shit. I say that with tremendous respect. We spent a lot of time last year making ‘Starfighter,’ and the opportunity as Ryan started talking about this character, I was like, ‘Bro, let’s ride.’ We’ll see you in 2028!”
Levy’s involvement has generated considerable excitement among Marvel fans, especially after Deadpool & Wolverine became one of the studio’s biggest commercial successes. His blend of action, humour and emotional storytelling could offer a fresh direction for Ghost Rider, a character that has traditionally leaned heavily into supernatural horror.
Ghost Rider returns to the big screen after years away
Ryan Gosling will become the latest actor to portray Ghost Rider, but he won’t be the first to wear the flaming skull. Nicolas Cage famously played Johnny Blaze in Sony’s Ghost Rider (2007) and later returned for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in 2011. While both films earned a dedicated fan following over time, they received largely mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and never fully established the character as a major cinematic franchise.
Following those films, the character eventually returned to Marvel, which introduced a different version of Ghost Rider in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Gabriel Luna portrayed Robbie Reyes, a younger Ghost Rider whose storyline became one of the show’s standout arcs. Marvel even planned a standalone Hulu series centred on Luna’s character, but the project was ultimately cancelled before production began.
Marvel Studios has not confirmed whether Gosling will portray Johnny Blaze, Robbie Reyes or another incarnation of Ghost Rider. However, the original Johnny Blaze remains the most recognisable version in Marvel Comics. His origin revolves around making a desperate bargain with the demon Mephisto to save his father’s life, only to become permanently bonded with the Spirit of Vengeance. The transformation grants him supernatural strength, a hellfire-powered motorcycle, mystical chains and the terrifying Penance Stare, which forces victims to experience the suffering they have caused others.
What Ryan Gosling’s casting means for the MCU
Ghost Rider has long been one of Marvel’s most requested characters to join the MCU, particularly as the franchise expands into darker supernatural storytelling. Recent projects have introduced elements of magic, monsters and the occult, making the timing ideal for the Spirit of Vengeance to finally receive a modern cinematic reboot. A standalone Ghost Rider film could also open the door for future appearances alongside supernatural Marvel characters such as Blade, Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night.
Ryan Gosling’s addition further strengthens Marvel’s growing roster of Oscar-nominated and award-winning talent. The actor has continued to balance blockbuster entertainment with acclaimed dramatic performances, and his recent science-fiction film Project Hail Mary has added fresh momentum to his career. Before entering the MCU, Gosling will also headline Star Wars: Starfighter, which is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on May 28, 2027.
Marvel Studios has yet to reveal supporting cast members, story details or whether Ghost Rider will connect directly to upcoming Avengers films. Even so, announcing Gosling as the franchise’s newest antihero has already made the 2028 project one of Marvel’s most talked-about future releases.
