Disney’s live-action Moana will begin streaming on Disney+ on October 21, 2026, just over three months after its July 10 theatrical release. The date marks the film’s subscription-streaming debut, following its earlier availability to buy or rent digitally.
Directed by Hamilton filmmaker Thomas Kail, the remake stars Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana, a young voyager who leaves her island of Motunui on a mission to save her people. Dwayne Johnson reprises Maui, the demigod he originally voiced in Disney’s 2016 animated film.
How Is the Live-Action Moana Different?
Rather than continuing the story of Moana 2, the new movie retells Moana’s first ocean adventure with live-action performances and locations. It also introduces “Along the Way,” a new Lin-Manuel Miranda song featuring Lagaʻaia, Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho, the original animated Moana. Cravalho serves as an executive producer. Jemaine Clement also returns to voice Tamatoa, preserving another connection with the animated cast.
Disney+ already offers both the 2016 animated Moana and its 2024 sequel. Adding the remake will give viewers a convenient way to revisit the franchise and compare two takes on the same journey.
For anyone who missed the film in cinemas, October 21 is the date to mark.
