Fresh off the historic success of Lokah: Chapter 1 Chandra, Kalyani Priyadarshan is preparing to take a giant leap in her career with her first Bollywood film. The actress has been cast opposite Ranveer Singh in Pralay, an ambitious zombie action thriller that promises to present her in a completely new light. Instead of playing a conventional supporting role, Kalyani will reportedly step into an action-heavy character that places her alongside the film’s biggest set pieces.
The project marks a major milestone for the Malayalam star, who has steadily expanded her filmography across South Indian cinema. After earning praise for her performance in Lokah, Kalyani is now expected to showcase a different side of her talent as she takes on physically demanding action sequences for the first time on such a large scale.
Kalyani To Undergo International Action Training
According to information exclusively reported by Variety India, Pralay will avoid the familiar trope of portraying its female lead as someone waiting to be rescued. Instead, Kalyani’s character has been designed to actively participate in the film’s intense action, with several large-scale stunt sequences planned throughout the story.
To prepare for the demanding role, the actress will reportedly train with internationally renowned stunt coordinators and action specialists. Ranveer Singh is also expected to undergo the same preparation, allowing both actors to perform many of the film’s carefully choreographed sequences together. The production team is said to have invested significant time in designing the action, aiming to deliver a cinematic experience that matches global standards.
Industry insiders suggest that Kalyani’s stunt work will be among the highlights of the film, with the makers planning action moments comparable in scale and ambition to those seen in major Hollywood productions featuring female action stars. The emphasis on practical training reflects the team’s larger vision of creating an immersive action spectacle rather than relying entirely on visual effects.
A Big-Budget Zombie Thriller Begins Filming Soon
Pralay has already generated considerable interest because of its unusual genre. Zombie films remain relatively rare in mainstream Indian cinema, making the project one of the most ambitious experiments currently in production. Set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world, the film combines survival drama, large-scale action and extensive visual effects to create a story unlike most recent Bollywood releases.
The film is reportedly being mounted on a budget of around ₹300 crore, placing it among the most expensive Indian productions currently in development. Directed by Jay Mehta, Pralay is backed by Hansal Mehta’s True Story Films along with Ranveer Singh’s banner, Maa Kasam Films. Months of pre-production have gone into developing the world, action choreography and visual effects before cameras begin rolling.
Production is expected to commence next month, with Ranveer Singh filming the first schedule through the Diwali period. Following that, the actor is expected to take a paternity break before returning to complete the remaining portions of the film in 2027. The staggered schedule has reportedly been planned well in advance to accommodate both the scale of production and the actor’s personal commitments.
Lokah Success Opens A New Chapter
Kalyani’s Bollywood debut comes at a time when her career has gathered remarkable momentum. Lokah: Chapter 1 Chandra recently emerged as the highest-grossing Malayalam film worldwide, introducing audiences to a fantasy universe inspired by regional folklore. Her portrayal of a yakshi received appreciation and helped strengthen the film’s emotional core alongside its superhero elements.
The actress is also set to reprise her role in Lokah: Chapter 2, which will shift its primary focus toward Tovino Thomas’ character, Chathan. Kalyani recently confirmed that production on the sequel is expected to begin in September. The next installment will once again be written and directed by Dominic Arun, while producer Dulquer Salmaan continues to play an important role in expanding the planned five-film franchise built around mythology and local legends.
With Pralay, however, Kalyani is stepping into completely different territory. The move from fantasy drama to a large-scale zombie thriller signals her willingness to experiment with genres while reaching a wider Hindi-speaking audience. If the film delivers on its ambitious promise, it could become one of the defining moments of her career and establish her as a leading action performer across Indian cinema.
