Mattel is continuing its push into Hollywood, and this time one of its most recognizable toy brands is taking the spotlight. Apple Original Films has dropped the first trailer for Matchbox, an action-packed adventure inspired by the legendary die-cast toy cars that have entertained generations of children. Fronted by WWE superstar and actor John Cena, the film promises a mix of globe-trotting action, high-speed vehicles and a story built around friendship, placing a fresh cinematic spin on the classic toy line.
Rather than focusing solely on cars, Matchbox introduces an original adventure that blends espionage, explosive action sequences and emotional reunions. Directed by Sam Hargrave, best known for Netflix’s Extraction films, the movie is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on October 9, making it one of the platform’s biggest action releases of the year.
John Cena leads a dangerous mission with old friends
The newly released trailer introduces John Cena as Sean Walker, a highly skilled operative with deep knowledge of automobiles and dangerous missions. His quiet reunion with childhood friends takes an unexpected turn after the group suddenly begins feeling disoriented inside a bar. Realising something is seriously wrong, Sean warns them, “Everybody listen, we’re all gonna wake up someplace different.”
His prediction quickly proves accurate as the group regains consciousness aboard a cargo aircraft, where they find themselves captured by armed enemies. In one of the trailer’s standout moments, Sean hangs from the roof with his hands restrained while a ruthless interrogator demands answers.
“Where is the nuclear warhead, Walker?”
From there, the footage launches into a series of high-speed chases, hand-to-hand combat, daring escapes and large-scale explosions, suggesting that the childhood friends are suddenly caught in a mission with global consequences. According to the official synopsis, the group must work together to stop an impending worldwide disaster while rediscovering the bond that once united them.
Star-studded cast joins the Mattel adaptation
Alongside John Cena, the film features an impressive supporting cast led by Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda, who continues to expand his presence in major international productions. While the trailer keeps many of their characters under wraps, it hints that each member of the team will play an important role in the mission.
The screenplay comes from David Coggeshall, whose previous credits include The Family Plan and Orphan: First Kill. Sam Hargrave’s involvement also raises expectations for the action sequences, as the filmmaker has built a reputation for delivering practical stunt work and elaborate combat choreography. His experience with large-scale action films appears to translate naturally into Matchbox’s fast-paced world of vehicles, international locations and relentless pursuit.
Mattel continues building its movie universe
Although many viewers may associate Matchbox simply with miniature toy cars, the brand has remained popular for nearly seven decades. Mattel first announced plans for the adaptation in 2022, aiming to transform the classic toy line into a modern adventure while preserving the sense of imagination that made it a household name.
Speaking previously about the project, Mattel Films executive producer Robbie Brenner explained the company’s creative vision.
“For nearly 70 years, Matchbox has carried enormous cultural relevance and inspired generations of kids to unleash their imaginations, combining what they see in the world every day with what they dream their own world to be. We look forward to working with our incredible partners at Skydance Media to craft a story for the big screen that evokes the same, imaginative spirit of this beloved Mattel franchise and delights fans of all ages.”
The film also reflects Mattel’s growing ambition to transform its toy catalogue into successful entertainment franchises. Following the enormous worldwide success of Barbie, the company has accelerated development on several adaptations based on well-known brands including Hot Wheels, American Girl, Barney, Polly Pocket, Thomas & Friends and Uno. Each project explores a different genre, signalling that Mattel is aiming to create a diverse slate rather than repeating the formula that worked for Barbie.
Produced by Skydance alongside Mattel Films, Matchbox is backed by producers David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger and Robbie Brenner. While the film takes inspiration from one of the world’s most familiar toy brands, its first trailer makes it clear that audiences should expect a full-scale action blockbuster rather than a nostalgic family adventure. With John Cena leading the cast, Sam Hargrave directing and a globe-spanning mission at its centre, Matchbox is shaping up to be another major step in Mattel’s expanding journey from toy shelves to the big screen.
