Jennifer Lawrence has found another high-profile project, and this one takes her into original science fiction. The Oscar-winning actor is set to star in The Flood, the next original film from Barbarian and Weapons filmmaker Zach Cregger, with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. planning a theatrical release for August 11, 2028.
Cregger will write, direct and produce the sci-fi thriller, while Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment is involved alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. Plot details are still being deliberately kept under wraps, leaving Lawrence’s character and the film’s central conflict officially undisclosed.
What makes the casting particularly interesting is that The Flood is not an adaptation, sequel or pre-existing franchise assignment. It is an original Cregger idea being positioned as a sizable theatrical science-fiction movie — and Lawrence now gives that project an A-list performer at its center.

Confirming Lawrence’s involvement, Cregger said:
“Jennifer is one of a kind, and I’m beyond excited to see her in this role.”
Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy also described Lawrence as central to what they called Cregger’s “bold and wholly original vision” for the film.
For Cregger, The Flood continues an increasingly close relationship with New Line. The studio previously released Weapons, his 2025 mystery-horror film, which went on to earn roughly $270 million worldwide.
That success is significant here because The Flood represents something studios have become more selective about financing at a large scale: an original genre movie without a familiar franchise name doing the initial marketing work.
‘The Flood’ apparently began with Spielberg — and an idea about space
Although the actual story remains secret, Cregger has already revealed a little about how the movie came together.
He has explained that the possibility of making a film with Steven Spielberg pushed him to rapidly develop an idea worthy of the opportunity. According to Cregger, he effectively gave himself only a few days to find the concept.
The breakthrough reportedly happened while Cregger and his wife, actor Sara Paxton, were watching a movie involving an abandoned spacecraft. A conversation about how frightening it would be to become trapped in space helped spark the concept that eventually became The Flood.
That is about as far as reliable information currently goes. Despite unofficial plot descriptions circulating online, New Line has not publicly confirmed a detailed synopsis, so specific character names, planets, alien discoveries or other story elements should currently be treated cautiously.
Cregger has, however, described the project as science fiction rather than simply another conventional horror film, suggesting that The Flood could push him into a somewhat different genre space while retaining the unsettling sensibility associated with his earlier work.
Jennifer Lawrence adds another major filmmaker to her slate
The Flood also extends a particularly filmmaker-driven stretch of Lawrence’s career.
After starring for Lynne Ramsay in Die My Love, Lawrence has continued lining up projects with major directors, including Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night. She is also returning to the Hunger Games universe as Katniss Everdeen in Sunrise on the Reaping.
Cregger offers something different from those projects. Rather than placing Lawrence inside an established franchise or literary adaptation, The Flood gives her the lead role in a completely original genre movie whose premise remains almost entirely hidden.
That mystery will probably remain part of the film’s appeal for some time. With its August 11, 2028 date already set, the next major pieces to watch are additional casting, the start of production and — most importantly — the first official description of exactly what Cregger has planned beyond the reaches of Earth.
