Three years after Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves arrived in cinemas, fans have received an encouraging update about the fantasy franchise’s future. While there has been little official movement on a follow-up since the 2023 film’s release, the creative team behind the adventure has now confirmed that a sequel script already exists. The bigger challenge, however, is convincing the studio to move ahead with another big-budget outing.
The update came during San Diego Comic-Con, where co-writer and co-director Jonathan Goldstein opened up about the project’s status. Although the sequel is far from being officially announced, his comments suggest that the filmmakers haven’t given up on revisiting the world of swords, spells and unlikely heroes.
Sequel Script Is Ready, Says Jonathan Goldstein
Speaking during Comic-Con, Goldstein revealed that he and longtime collaborator John Francis Daley had already completed a screenplay for a second Dungeons & Dragons film after being hired to develop the project. However, he admitted that the script’s future remains uncertain because of the financial realities surrounding large-scale fantasy productions.
Goldstein said, “We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons. We were hired to write it. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.”
His comments are likely to excite fans who appreciated the chemistry between the original cast, including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant. While no casting discussions have been announced publicly, Goldstein’s remarks make it clear that the filmmakers would welcome the chance to reunite the ensemble if the sequel receives the green light.
Strong Reviews Could Not Translate Into Box Office Success
When Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves premiered in 2023, it earned widespread praise from both critics and audiences. The film was celebrated for blending fantasy action with humour, heartfelt character moments and faithful references to the iconic tabletop role-playing game. Many viewers considered it one of the strongest video game and tabletop-inspired adaptations in recent years.
Despite that positive reception, the film struggled to generate the kind of worldwide earnings needed to launch a major blockbuster franchise. Produced on a reported budget of around $150 million, the movie collected approximately $205 million globally during its theatrical run. Although respectable by many standards, those numbers fell short once marketing costs and distribution expenses were factored into the overall investment, making the prospect of another similarly scaled film a more difficult business decision.
That financial performance appears to be the main reason the sequel has remained on hold rather than moving into production. Studios have become increasingly cautious about approving costly fantasy projects unless they promise significant box office returns or long-term franchise potential.
The Dungeons & Dragons Universe Continues to Expand
Even though a second film has yet to receive approval, Hasbro has continued exploring ways to grow the Dungeons & Dragons brand beyond cinemas. A live-action television series was originally ordered by Paramount+ in 2023, raising hopes that the fantasy universe would continue on the small screen.
Those plans changed the following year when the streaming platform decided not to proceed with the project created by Rawson Marshall Thurber. Instead of shelving the idea entirely, Hasbro began searching for another partner interested in bringing the iconic fantasy setting to television.
The franchise has since found a new home at Netflix, where a fresh live-action series titled The Forgotten Realms is now in development. The project is being developed by Shawn Levy alongside writer and showrunner Drew Crevello, signalling that the tabletop phenomenon still has significant value for studios eager to build expansive fantasy worlds for streaming audiences.
While the future of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 remains uncertain, Goldstein’s latest comments confirm that fans are not waiting on an idea—they are waiting on a decision. With a completed script already in place and the filmmakers eager to return, the fate of the sequel now rests largely on whether the financial numbers eventually align with the creative ambition behind the project.
