Armie Hammer’s return to leading-man roles is gaining fresh momentum after Citizen Vigilante secured a major international distribution deal. The action thriller, which has remained in the spotlight since its North American release, is now preparing to reach more audiences worldwide following an unexpected promotional boost from Elon Musk. The film’s latest business move comes after Musk temporarily made the entire movie available to millions of users on X, creating publicity few independent films ever receive.
Quiver Distribution has now acquired worldwide distribution rights for Citizen Vigilante, although the agreement excludes the United Kingdom, German-speaking territories, South Korea and Taiwan. The company, led by co-presidents Jeff Sackman and Berry Meyerowitz, had already handled the film’s North American release, which began on June 19.
Elon Musk’s Surprise Promotion Changed the Conversation
The biggest twist in the film’s release arrived when Elon Musk shared Citizen Vigilante in its entirety on X, allowing users to watch or download it free for 48 hours between Thursday and Saturday. According to director Uwe Boll, Musk first reached out through the team behind Boll’s U.S.-based podcast, Uwe Boll Raw, rather than contacting him personally.
“He contacted my U.S. podcast, but not me directly, and they told me, like, ‘We got a message from Elon Musk,’” Boll explained. “I thought that it must be a parody account… I mean, you’re not really thinking that he would contact you, but then it turned out it was true.”
The filmmaker added that the interaction happened quickly and that Musk effectively asked for permission before posting the movie.
“But I didn’t really chat myself with him or talk to him. It was very quick, you know. I think this guy, I don’t know what he’s doing per day, but I think his attention went like fast, you know. So, I felt also if we don’t in a way agree to do it, he would’ve just moved on.”
Asked whether Musk had sought approval before uploading the film, Boll replied, “Basically, yes.”
While making the film available for free could potentially reduce digital sales, Boll believes the enormous publicity generated by Musk’s platform may ultimately prove more valuable for an independent production with limited marketing resources.
“There is, of course, a good and a bad side of the X posting,” Boll said. “The question you have to evaluate is: Is that bringing more money in the end, or is that costing me a lot of money? You know, you get a lot of PR, but you don’t get a lot of money. So, we will figure that out in the next four or six weeks.”
Director Eyes a Sequel Despite Mixed Reception
Boll also explained that agreeing to Musk’s proposal made sense because the film had only been released in the United States and Canada at the time. Without confirmed distribution in several international markets, he felt there was little downside to exposing the movie to a much larger global audience.
“Given the political power that the movie unleashed, and then it was only out in the U.S. and Canada, it felt a little like: No, we should, for a short time at least, give this movie to the world.”
According to the director, Citizen Vigilante is currently available across major digital platforms in North America, including iTunes, Amazon, Fandango and Google Play. He estimates the film has earned roughly $600,000 so far against a reported production budget of around $2 million. Although the movie has not yet recovered its costs, Boll remains optimistic about its commercial future.
“When you make a successful movie, you always hope that you can make a second part, and it would make sense to send [Sanders, the vigilante played by Hammer] to England or to send him to America, and then we go from there.”
The filmmaker revealed that ideas for a sequel already exist, although a screenplay has not yet been written. When asked whether Armie Hammer would return for another installment, Boll responded, “I think he would be happy to do it.” Hammer’s representatives have not publicly confirmed whether the actor plans to reprise the role.
Uwe Boll Responds to Critical Backlash
The film has divided both critics and audiences since its release. One review described Citizen Vigilante as “a violent, incoherent, morally bankrupt slice of exploitation,” but Boll insisted he has no issue with that description.
“I personally like exploitation movies,” he said, explaining that filmmakers such as John Carpenter and George A. Romero have long influenced his work. “So, I’m not against this kind of movie in general, and I don’t think that’s an insult. I don’t try to be Tarkovsky.”
Boll also argued that some of the harsh criticism stemmed from political disagreements rather than the film itself.
“They cannot stand to face the political reality.”
Despite the mixed reviews, the movie has found supporters within the film industry. Oscar-winning writer Roger Avary publicly praised the project and even questioned whether Boll had become “the boldest and bravest auteur working in cinema today.” Boll enthusiastically shared the compliment online, showing that regardless of critical opinion, Citizen Vigilante continues to generate conversation well beyond its theatrical release.
