Aamir Khan is heading back to Japanese cinemas.
Sitaare Zameen Par has officially secured a spring 2027 theatrical release in Japan, where it will open at Human Trust Cinema Yurakucho, YEBISU GARDEN CINEMA and other theaters nationwide. GEEK PICTURES will distribute the film in collaboration with Geek Pictures Pvt. Ltd.
The release will mark the first time in nine years that an Aamir Khan-starring film has opened theatrically in Japan. His previous starring release there was Dangal, which reached Japanese cinemas on April 6, 2018.
That makes Sitaare Zameen Par more than another international release for the actor—it is a return to a market where some of his best-known films have already built an audience.
Sitaare Zameen Par gets a new Japanese title
In Japan, the film will be released under the title 『シターレ！星屑たちのミラクル・チーム』, roughly positioning it around the “miracle team” at the heart of the story. The distributor also noted that “Sitaare” means “stars” in Hindi.
Directed by R. S. Prasanna, the film stars Khan as Gulshan, an arrogant basketball coach whose life changes after he is ordered to perform community service and coach a team of adults with disabilities.
The players are portrayed by 10 first-time actors who themselves have disabilities, a casting choice the Japanese distributor is emphasizing as one of the movie’s defining elements. Genelia Deshmukh, Gurpal Singh, Dolly Ahluwalia and Brijendra Kala also feature in the cast.
Sitaare Zameen Par is an official remake of the Spanish hit Champions and is positioned as a spiritual successor to Khan’s 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. It originally opened in India on June 20, 2025.
Why the nine-year gap needs one clarification
Aamir Khan has not been completely absent from Japanese theaters during that period.
Laapataa Ladies, which he produced, received a Japanese theatrical release in 2024. The new announcement specifically refers to Sitaare Zameen Par as his first starring vehicle to reach Japanese cinemas in nine years.
That distinction is important because Khan’s international presence has increasingly extended beyond acting. He serves as both star and producer on Sitaare Zameen Par, while Laapataa Ladies was another Aamir Khan Productions title that found an overseas theatrical life.
Japan also has previous history with his films including 3 Idiots, PK and especially Dangal, whose international success helped cement Khan’s reputation as one of Indian cinema’s most globally recognized stars.
The choice of Sitaare Zameen Par for his Japanese return is therefore a natural one. Like Dangal and Taare Zameen Par, it combines a broadly accessible sports or family framework with a story built around social themes and personal growth.
No exact Japanese release date yet
For now, GEEK PICTURES has announced only a spring 2027 window rather than a specific date. New stills from the movie were released alongside the announcement, with additional promotional material expected closer to release.
That gives Sitaare Zameen Par an unusually long international theatrical life. By the time it arrives in Japan, almost two years will have passed since its original Indian release.
For Aamir Khan, though, the bigger number is nine.
After Dangal brought him to Japanese theaters in 2018, Sitaare Zameen Par will finally put him back on those screens in spring 2027—this time as a basketball coach trying to discover that winning may not be the most important part of the game.
