The legal battle surrounding NewJeans has taken a sharper turn. ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE, has officially filed a lawsuit against former group member Danielle Marsh, seeking 33.1 billion KRW (approximately $20.6 million) for alleged breach of contract.

With Danielle’s exit now formalised, NewJeans — also referred to as NJZ — continues forward as a four-member group featuring Minji, Hanni, Haerin, and Hyein.

Why ADOR chose a ₹33.1 billion KRW lawsuit — not more

According to Korean media reports dated January 9, ADOR could have legally pursued damages exceeding 100 billion KRW, based on the remaining contract term and the group’s commercial scale. However, the label deliberately reduced its claim to roughly one-third of that amount.

ADOR reportedly calculated the reduced figure by factoring in Danielle’s future earning potential as an active artist and the likelihood of court recognition. The company stated that the lawsuit strictly concerns contractual penalties, not compensation claims made by Danielle herself.

What the lawsuit includes

As per reports from Chosun Ilbo, ADOR’s legal filing breaks down the amount as follows:

  • 30 billion KRW in contractual penalty fees
  • 3.1 billion KRW in damages related to halted professional activities and missed advertisement commitments
  • An additional 10 billion KRW in damages claimed against Danielle’s mother and former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin, whom the label alleges played a key role in her departure

ADOR has maintained that these claims are tied to breach-of-contract obligations under Danielle’s exclusive agreement.

The contract clause at the centre of the dispute

Under South Korea’s Standard Exclusive Contract for Popular Culture and Arts Personnel, breach penalties are calculated using a specific formula:

Average monthly sales from the two years before contract termination × remaining contract months

ADOR confirmed that this clause was part of NewJeans’ exclusive agreement, forming the legal basis for the penalty amount now being contested.

How Danielle’s removal unfolded

On December 29, 2025, ADOR officially terminated Danielle Marsh’s exclusive contract, removing her from NewJeans. At the time, Danielle was just 20 years old. The announcement came amid an already volatile legal and public dispute between the group and its label.

This lawsuit is the latest chapter in a conflict that traces back to August 2024, when Min Hee-jin was ousted as ADOR’s CEO — an event that triggered months of court battles, public statements, and escalating tensions within the K-pop industry.

What this means for NewJeans moving forward

While NewJeans continues as a four-member act, the lawsuit underscores the fragile state of idol-label relationships, especially when creative control, contracts, and management power collide. The case is expected to be closely watched, as its outcome could influence how future K-pop contracts are structured and enforced.

For now, Danielle Marsh faces one of the most high-profile legal showdowns involving a former idol in recent years — while ADOR and HYBE brace for a courtroom battle that could reshape NJZ’s legacy.
