While fans are celebrating his latest outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland has revealed that Marvel Studios has quietly been preparing for the day another actor takes over the iconic role. The actor says those conversations have been happening for years, showing that the studio is already thinking several steps ahead.
Rather than viewing the transition as the end of his journey, Holland appears excited by the idea of helping shape what comes next. He believes Spider-Man is a character that should continue evolving for new generations, and he wants to play a meaningful role in ensuring that handover happens the right way.
Tom Holland says Marvel has a clear long-term vision
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast while promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland confirmed that discussions about his eventual farewell as Spider-Man began shortly after Spider-Man: No Way Home wrapped production. Although he acknowledged that plans can always change, he said Marvel already has a roadmap for the character’s future.
“There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Holland said. “It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting.”
The actor explained that these creative meetings have become one of the most rewarding parts of playing Peter Parker. Instead of focusing only on his current films, he enjoys discussing how Spider-Man’s story can continue long after his own chapter comes to a close. “I know I get really excited when we have these meetings and chat about it. But that is the thing I want to do most in this character, for sure,” he added.
He wants to mentor the next Spider-Man
Holland’s comments suggest he hopes to remain connected to the franchise even after stepping away from the lead role. Looking back at his own introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he credited Robert Downey Jr. with helping him settle into one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. That experience is something he hopes to pass on when the next Spider-Man is eventually cast.
Earlier this year, Holland told Esquire that he would love to mentor his successor just as Downey supported him during his early Marvel films. “In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next,” he said. While Marvel has not officially announced a future Spider-Man actor, Holland did mention Owen Cooper, the breakout star of Netflix’s Adolescence, as someone he would like to see wear the suit one day.
Holland first appeared as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War in 2016 before leading multiple Spider-Man films and becoming one of the MCU’s most recognisable faces. He followed Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in taking on the role, making him the third live-action actor to portray the beloved superhero.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins another chapter
The timing of Holland’s comments comes as Spider-Man: Brand New Day enjoys a strong theatrical launch. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film continues Peter Parker’s story after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, exploring his life after the world forgets his identity. Alongside Tom Holland, the film stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Florence Pugh, Tramell Tillman, Marisa Tomei, and Mark Ruffalo.
India received the film on July 30, 2026, one day ahead of its global release.
