Zeenat Aman Recalls Struggle With Bollywood’s ‘Sex Symbol’ Tag

Veteran actor Zeenat Aman has looked back on one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding her film career, saying the glamorous image audiences associated with her never reflected who she truly was. The Bollywood icon, who redefined the portrayal of women on screen during the 1970s and 1980s, revealed that she spent years trying to balance public perception with her real personality. While her bold characters became unforgettable, she believes many people failed to see the person behind those roles.

Speaking during an interview on Shubra Aiyappa’s YouTube channel, Zeenat reflected on her journey through Hindi cinema and discussed how the industry’s expectations often shaped the characters she was offered. She also explained why the “sex symbol” label stayed with her for decades, despite it never matching her own identity.

Zeenat Aman Says Her Real Personality Was Very Different

Sharing her experience, Zeenat said there was always a clear gap between the image created around her and the woman she actually was. Although audiences admired her glamorous screen presence, she believes people were often surprised after meeting her in real life.

“I always found that there was such disparity between what was projected about me, and the person that I truly was. The sex symbol tag stayed with me for a very long time. When people would meet me, they would realise that I was truly nothing like the characters I portrayed.”

The actress added that filmmakers rarely showed interest in exploring another side of her personality. Instead, she felt many projects focused almost entirely on presenting her as a glamorous screen presence rather than giving her more layered roles.

“Nobody was interested in me being cerebral. They were only interested in gayegi, nachegi, do dialogue bolegi, bheegegi, barish mein(singing, dancing, saying two dialogues, getting wet in the rain)… I feel that my contributions were always modest and the additions that people wanted were not so modest. It has happened to me on several films where they wanted more cleavage, more of the back showing, that came from the production.”

Her remarks offer another glimpse into how female actors, particularly during that era of Bollywood, were frequently expected to fit carefully crafted commercial images. While Zeenat became one of Hindi cinema’s most recognizable stars, she now says many creative decisions regarding her appearance were driven by production teams rather than her own choices.

Looking Back at Satyam Shivam Sundaram

Zeenat had previously addressed similar conversations while reflecting on her iconic role as Rupa in Satyam Shivam Sundaram. The film generated enormous debate following its release, with some critics accusing it of promoting obscenity because of the character’s appearance. The actress, however, has consistently maintained that she never viewed the human body as something shameful and believed her costume and look were simply part of the director’s creative vision.

“Anyone acquainted with the history of Bollywood will know that there was much controversy and brouhaha about my character Rupa in Satyam Shivam Sundaram. I was always quite amused by the accusations of obscenity as I did not and do not find anything obscene about the human body. I am a director’s actor and these looks were part of my job. Rupa’s sensuality was not the crux of the plot, but a part of it. As it is, the set is not even remotely a sensual space. Every move is choreographed, rehearsed and performed in front of dozens of crew members.”

Released during the peak of her career, Satyam Shivam Sundaram remains one of the defining films in Zeenat Aman’s filmography. Alongside classics such as Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Don, Qurbani, Dostana and Dharam Veer, it helped establish her as one of Bollywood’s biggest stars of the 1970s and 1980s. She had earlier won the Miss Asia Pacific International title in 1970 before making her mark in Indian cinema.

What’s Next for the Veteran Star

Despite decades in the industry, Zeenat Aman continues to stay active as both an actor and a public voice. She will next appear in Bun Tikki, directed by Faraaz Arif Ansari and co-starring Shabana Azmi. The project has already generated interest as it brings together two celebrated performers known for choosing meaningful stories.

Most recently, Zeenat appeared in the 2025 Netflix series The Royals, alongside Bhumi Pednekar, Ishaan Khatter, Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Vihaan Samat, Dino Morea and Milind Soman. Although the show received mixed reviews after release, it has been renewed for a second season. Meanwhile, Zeenat’s candid reflections continue to resonate with audiences, offering a rare look at the realities behind Bollywood’s glamorous image and the challenges many actresses quietly faced throughout their careers.
