Sonam Bajwa has now joined the growing public debate surrounding Punjab’s large-scale stray dog control campaign, and the actress is making it clear that she does not want the operation turning into something cruel or inhumane. As the Punjab government officially launched its statewide stray dog management drive on May 22, Sonam took to social media to directly appeal to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, asking authorities to approach the issue with compassion, proper planning and responsibility instead of panic-driven action.
The actress stressed that many people were misunderstanding the Supreme Court’s recent directions regarding stray dog management. According to Sonam, the court had called for regulated removal from sensitive public spaces alongside sterilisation, vaccination and sheltering measures — not mass elimination of community animals. In her statement, she openly questioned whether Punjab currently has enough infrastructure to ethically handle such a huge operation at all. “Where are the shelters? Where is the infrastructure?” she asked while warning that the campaign “absolutely cannot become a death sentence for voiceless animals.”

Sonam Bajwa Calls for Long-Term Solutions Instead of Panic Measure
While acknowledging that public safety and rising dog-bite incidents are serious concerns, Sonam argued that compassion and accountability must remain part of the conversation. She urged the government to work closely with NGOs, veterinarians, municipal bodies and animal welfare experts to create more sustainable solutions instead of relying only on aggressive removal drives. According to the actress, sterilisation programmes, vaccination systems and proper rehabilitation shelters are essential if authorities genuinely want long-term population control without unnecessary suffering.
Her comments arrived just as public anxiety around stray dog attacks continues growing across Punjab. Earlier this year, the Punjab State Human Rights Commission reportedly intervened after a sharp increase in reported animal attack cases throughout the state. The commission demanded detailed data from health departments and municipal corporations to better understand the scale of the issue and its impact on public safety.
Punjab’s New Campaign Faces Immediate Public Scrutiny
Following mounting pressure, the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government announced it would begin enforcing the Supreme Court’s recommendations through a statewide campaign targeting aggressive stray animals considered dangerous to residents and children. Officials reportedly described the operation as an effort to isolate and manage animals posing immediate threats in urban areas and public spaces.
However, the speed and scale of the campaign instantly triggered concern among animal welfare groups and civic activists. Critics fear that without strict transparency, institutional monitoring and adequate shelter systems, the drive could eventually become excessive or even lead to inhumane treatment of animals under the justification of public safety.
Sonam Bajwa’s intervention has now added celebrity attention to the issue, pushing the debate much deeper into mainstream conversation online. Many social media users supported her balanced stance, particularly her argument that protecting human safety and protecting animals should not be treated as opposing goals.
On the professional front, Sonam Bajwa was recently seen in Border 2 alongside Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan and Ahan Shetty. But right now, it’s her emotional appeal for humane treatment of community animals that has people talking far more than her film projects.
