Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan are finally heading back to the big screen together, and fans won’t have to wait much longer to watch their latest face-off. The makers of Haiwaan have officially announced the film’s theatrical release date, putting an end to months of speculation. Directed by Priyadarshan, the suspense thriller is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about Hindi releases of the year. With an intriguing story, a fresh pairing in unusual roles, and a strong supporting cast, the film has already created curiosity among moviegoers.
The announcement arrived with a striking new poster carrying the tagline, “One obsession. One relentless pursuit.” Along with confirming the worldwide release plan, the makers revealed that Haiwaan will arrive in cinemas on September 11, 2026. The film is being backed by KVN Productions in association with Thespian Films, while Venkat K. Narayana and Shailaja Desai Fenn are producing the project. Apart from Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, the cast also includes Shriya Pilgaonkar and Saiyami Kher in important roles.
Priyadarshan Brings Back A Celebrated Thriller
Haiwaan isn’t an entirely new story, but audiences can expect plenty of surprises. The film serves as the official Hindi adaptation of Priyadarshan’s acclaimed 2016 Malayalam thriller Oppam, a film that earned praise for its gripping screenplay and emotional storytelling. Instead of making a scene-by-scene remake, Priyadarshan has reportedly reworked the screenplay and dialogues to suit Hindi audiences while retaining the emotional core of the original narrative. That approach could help the film stand apart from conventional remakes, something Bollywood has increasingly focused on in recent years.
The story revolves around a visually impaired caretaker played by Saif Ali Khan, whose life takes a dangerous turn after he becomes entangled in a murder investigation. As he struggles to prove his innocence, he finds himself hunted by a ruthless adversary. Adding another layer of excitement, Akshay Kumar takes on a negative role, stepping away from his familiar action-hero image to portray a cold-hearted antagonist. Their conflict is expected to drive much of the suspense throughout the film.
Shriya Pilgaonkar Joins A Powerful Ensemble
Shriya Pilgaonkar has been confirmed as one of the film’s key performers, although the makers are still keeping details about her character tightly under wraps. Over the last few years, she has earned appreciation for her performances across several OTT originals, making her addition another interesting aspect of the project. Saiyami Kher also features in a significant role, adding more depth to an already impressive ensemble. With performers from different backgrounds coming together, Haiwaan appears to be relying heavily on character-driven storytelling rather than spectacle alone.
Priyadarshan has built a reputation for balancing emotional drama with edge-of-the-seat suspense, and Haiwaan looks set to continue that tradition. While the film is expected to deliver intense thriller moments, it will also depend on the chemistry between its lead actors. Since both Akshay and Saif have previously shared memorable screen space, expectations are naturally much higher this time around.
Akshay Kumar Opens Up About Working With Saif Again
Earlier, Akshay Kumar had spoken about sharing the screen once again with Saif Ali Khan after several years. Speaking to Hindustan Times, the actor said, “It’s great that I am working again with Priyadarshan ji, and the best part is that I am working with Saif Ali Khan. After a long, long time we are both going to come together, and I am actually waiting to start shooting with him.”
Akshay also spoke about the difference in their personalities while recalling their off-screen bond. He said Saif’s humour is “very SoBo” (South Bombay), while his own style connects more with people from “Andheri to Borivali.” Despite those differences, Akshay admitted that working alongside Saif has always been enjoyable, adding that their contrasting personalities actually make filming together even more entertaining.
The duo has shared screen space several times over the past three decades. Their previous collaborations include Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Yeh Dillagi, Tu Chor Main Sipahi, Keemat, and Tashan. Those films helped establish them as one of Bollywood’s popular on-screen partnerships, making Haiwaan a reunion many fans have been waiting to see.
With Priyadarshan returning to the thriller genre and Akshay Kumar embracing a rare villainous role opposite Saif Ali Khan’s emotionally driven protagonist, Haiwaan already carries enough ingredients to spark audience interest. If the film successfully captures the tension and emotional weight that made Oppam memorable while adding its own identity, it could become one of the standout suspense dramas of 2026. All eyes are now on its theatrical release when the film reaches cinemas worldwide on September 11.
