Kit Connor & Taika Waititi Lead Netflix’s Animated Charlie vs Chocolate Factory, Wonka Returns With Darker Edge

Something strange is cooking again inside the chocolate factory… and this version isn’t playing it safe. Netflix has officially revealed Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, a completely new spin on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory — but don’t expect the same old golden ticket story.

This one flips things around.

Instead of the classic innocent kid entering Wonka’s world, the story now follows a brand new character — Charlie Paley — voiced by Kit Connor. He’s not chasing magic… he’s trying to survive. Facing eviction, he and his group of friends plan a risky break-in at the factory, hoping to grab something valuable and save their homes.

Yeah, it’s got a bit more edge this time.

And then there’s Willy Wonka — but not exactly the version you remember. Voiced by Taika Waititi, this Wonka comes with a past. Turns out, he’s been in jail. Not metaphorically… actually behind bars after that infamous blueberry incident. Now he’s back, trying to rebuild his world — but things don’t go smooth.

The setting has also shifted big time. Instead of a timeless fantasy vibe, the film is planted in a modern-day London, mixing grounded struggles with the usual Wonka madness. Expect new characters, some surprise returns, and original songs thrown into the mix.

Behind the scenes, the project has been quietly building for years. After Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company back in 2021, the plan was always to expand this universe — not just remake it. Earlier ideas included animated series, but now it looks like all that development has turned into this full feature film.

Direction comes from Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan, with animation handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks — the same team behind visually stunning films like Spider-Verse. So visually, expectations are already high.

The tone though? That’s where it gets interesting.

From what the creators are hinting, this won’t be a clean, fairy-tale style adaptation. It’s described as more “unhinged,” slightly chaotic, and built for a new generation that wants something familiar but not predictable.

Connor has already said he connected with the modern London setting, while Waititi seems fully invested in bringing a more eccentric, slightly unpredictable Wonka to life.

The film is set for a 2027 release, and honestly, it feels like Netflix is aiming to turn this into something bigger — not just one movie, but maybe the start of a new version of the Wonka universe.

Whether fans accept this darker, flipped perspective or not… that’s the real question.

But one thing’s clear — this isn’t a remake.

It’s a gamble.
