The moment Bhooth Bangla’s first trailer dropped, nostalgia kicked in for many viewers. Social media quickly filled with reactions comparing its tone and visuals to Bhool Bhulaiyaa. From the familiar haveli setting to the return of certain actors, fans were convinced they were witnessing a spiritual continuation of the 2007 classic. But director Priyadarshan has now stepped in to clear the air—and he’s not leaving any room for confusion.
According to the veteran filmmaker, Bhooth Bangla is not connected to Bhool Bhulaiyaa in any way. Despite the similar atmosphere and casting choices, he insists the new film stands entirely on its own. In fact, he describes it as a full-blown fantasy that explores human belief in ghosts, blending it with a touch of scientific reasoning.
That’s where the biggest difference lies. While Bhool Bhulaiyaa leaned heavily into psychological horror, rooted in mental health and perception, Bhooth Bangla takes a more imaginative route. Priyadarshan hints at ideas linked to quantum physics—concepts like shifting consciousness from one body to another—which form the base of the story. It’s a shift from grounded suspense to something more abstract and experimental.
Interestingly, the comparisons didn’t come out of nowhere. Bhool Bhulaiyaa remains one of Hindi cinema’s most loved horror-comedies, originally directed by Priyadarshan and headlined by Akshay Kumar alongside Vidya Balan and Paresh Rawal. Over the years, the franchise expanded with two successful sequels starring Kartik Aaryan, but without Priyadarshan or Akshay’s involvement. That’s why their reunion for Bhooth Bangla naturally sparked speculation.
But beyond the franchise chatter, this film also marks something bigger—it’s Priyadarshan’s return to Hindi cinema after a five-year gap. And this time, he’s approaching comedy with a different mindset.
Despite being behind some of Bollywood’s most iconic comedies like Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, and Bhagam Bhag, the filmmaker admits he’s now cautious about the genre. He openly says he’s “afraid” of making a full-fledged comedy again, largely because of the risk of repetition. After directing nearly 100 films, he feels the challenge is no longer about making people laugh—it’s about finding something new that genuinely excites him.
That’s exactly what drew him to Bhooth Bangla. Instead of relying on punchlines, the film builds humor through situations. The characters take their circumstances seriously—sometimes even life-and-death serious—but the absurdity of those situations creates the comedy. It’s a style Priyadarshan has mastered over the years, and he’s bringing it back with a fresh twist.
The film brings together a strong ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Tabu, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Rajpal Yadav, all of whom have a history of delivering memorable performances in this space. With its mix of nostalgia, new-age storytelling, and experimental themes, Bhooth Bangla is shaping up to be more than just another horror-comedy.
As it gears up for its theatrical release on April 10, the film carries both expectations and curiosity. And while the “OG vibes” might remind audiences of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Priyadarshan is clear—this one is playing by completely different rules.
