Karthi’s ‘Vaa Vaathiyaar’ Release Stalled Again as Madras High Court Refuses to Lift Stay

With Vijay’ Jana Nayagan pushed indefinitely due to censor-related legal issues, the Pongal release window briefly appeared wide open for other Tamil films. One of the projects eyeing this festive slot was Karthi’ long-delayed film Vaa Vaathiyaar. However, hopes of a sudden theatrical release have once again hit a hard wall.

The Madras High Court has firmly reiterated its earlier order, placing a complete stay on the film’s release until outstanding financial dues from the production side are fully cleared. As things stand, Vaa Vaathiyaar remains stuck in legal limbo.

Why the Court Blocked the Pongal Release

Originally scheduled to release on December 12, Vaa Vaathiyaar has been facing legal trouble for months. With Jana Nayagan out of the Pongal race, the makers reportedly attempted to push the Karthi starrer into theatres during the festival season.

But during the latest hearing on Friday, a Division Bench comprising Justices S. M. Subramaniam and C. Kumarappan refused to relax the conditions imposed earlier. The court made it clear that the film cannot be released in any form—theatres, OTT platforms, or digital media—until the full dues of ₹21.78 crore are settled.

The bench noted that repeated assurances from the producer had not resulted in actual repayment, despite multiple deadline extensions.

The Financial Dispute at the Centre of the Case

The stay stems from an unpaid loan of ₹10.35 crore, which, with accumulated interest, has now ballooned to ₹21.78 crore. The amount was borrowed by producer Gnanavel Raja from businessman Arjunlal Sundardas, who was declared insolvent by the court back in 2014.

The official assignee managing Sundardas’ assets later moved the court seeking recovery of the amount and requested an injunction against the film’s release, which the court granted.

During earlier hearings, the producer’s legal team had offered to:

  • Pay ₹3.75 crore within 24 hours
  • Submit property documents as security for the remaining amount

However, the court rejected the proposal, pointing out that similar commitments made in the past were not honoured.

Court’s Strong Stand

In its latest observation, the court stated that sufficient time had already been granted and that it would not permit a partial settlement just to enable a release. Until the full amount is cleared, Vaa Vaathiyaar will remain barred from public exhibition.

This ruling effectively shuts the door on any immediate theatrical or OTT debut, even if another festival window opens.

About ‘Vaa Vaathiyaar’

Directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, Vaa Vaathiyaar is an action-comedy that generated early buzz with its quirky political undertones. The film stars Karthi and Krithi Shetty in lead roles, supported by an ensemble cast that includes:

  • Rajkiran
  • Sathyaraj
  • Anandaraj
  • Karunakaran
  • G. M. Sundar

The trailer previously hinted at Karthi playing a larger-than-life figure with strong ideological leanings, making the prolonged delay even more frustrating for fans.

Final Words

Despite a prime release window opening up unexpectedly, Vaa Vaathiyaar remains grounded due to unresolved financial issues. The Madras High Court’s firm stance sends a clear message: no release without full settlement.

Until the dues are paid in full, Karthi’s film will continue to wait on the sidelines—another reminder that in cinema, legal and financial clarity can matter just as much as star power.
