Dinesh Vijan Reveals No One Funded Stree, Calls Maddock’s Success “Unbelievable”

Dinesh Vijan Reveals No One Funded Stree

Maddock Films’ rise over the last few years looks almost effortless from the outside — blockbuster numbers, a rare successful cinematic universe, and consistent audience trust. But according to producer Dinesh Vijan, the journey began with hesitation, rejection, and a leap of faith that nearly didn’t happen.

Looking back at Stree, the film that changed everything, Vijan has revealed that no one wanted to fund it when it was first pitched.

“No One Was Funding Me”

In a recent interview, Vijan spoke candidly about Maddock Films’ recent golden run and how different things looked back in 2018. He admitted that when Stree was in development, the industry was reluctant to come on board — largely because of the film’s title and genre.

According to him, many felt Stree wouldn’t work theatrically. With no external backing, Vijan decided to finance the film himself, a move that would later redefine Hindi cinema’s approach to horror-comedy.

At the time, it was a gamble. In hindsight, it became a turning point.

From ₹25 Cr Gamble to a ₹875 Cr Phenomenon

Made on a modest ₹25 crore budget, Stree went on to gross ₹180 crore worldwide, driven by strong word of mouth, humour rooted in folklore, and an ensemble cast led by Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor.

What followed was something Bollywood rarely manages — a successful cinematic universe. Stree 2 didn’t just match expectations; it shattered them, earning over ₹875 crore worldwide, including a massive ₹601 crore from India alone, making it the biggest Hindi film of its year.

Maddock’s momentum didn’t stop there. Chhaava further cemented the banner’s dominance by crossing ₹800 crore globally, proving that the studio’s success wasn’t limited to one genre.

A More Daring Maddock Films

Success, Vijan says, has changed how Maddock approaches filmmaking — but not recklessly. He explained that the studio is now more confident about taking creative risks, especially at a larger scale.

The focus, however, remains firmly on theatrical experiences. Vijan believes audiences want spectacle, scale, and immersion — something that can’t be replicated on smaller screens.

Next Big Bet: Ikkis

One of Maddock’s most ambitious upcoming projects is Ikkis, a war drama directed by Sriram Raghavan. The film tells the story of Arun Khetarpal, the youngest recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, and marks a significant tonal shift from Maddock’s recent commercial hits.

The film stars Agastya Nanda, Jaideep Ahlawat, Dharmendra (in one of his final appearances), Sikander Kher, and Simar Bhatia. Originally scheduled for a December 25 release, Ikkis will now hit theatres on January 1, 2026.

Vijan describes the film as technically world-class — a statement that reflects Maddock’s growing confidence in backing ambitious, content-driven cinema.

Final Words

From being told that Stree wouldn’t work to building one of Bollywood’s most reliable production houses, Dinesh Vijan’s journey mirrors Maddock Films’ philosophy — take risks, trust stories, and back originality.

What began as a self-funded horror-comedy experiment has now evolved into a studio that sets trends rather than follows them. And if Maddock’s recent track record is anything to go by, its boldest chapters may still be ahead.
