The long-awaited Munna Bhai 3 is moving closer to production, with writer Farhad Samji reportedly joining filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani to develop the screenplay. According to an exclusive report by Variety India, Samji is currently writing the third instalment of the beloved comedy franchise, which is expected to go on floors in 2027.
The development brings Samji back to a film series he has been connected with since its beginning. While he is widely known for writing and directing commercial Hindi comedies, his contribution to the original Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. came through the opening refrain of the popular song “M Bole Toh.”
For fans waiting to see Sanjay Dutt’s Munna and Arshad Warsi’s Circuit reunite, the latest update offers a clearer indication that the project is progressing beyond years of discussions.
Samji’s Connection With the Original Film
Samji’s association with Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. began when composer Anu Malik contacted him to write the opening verse of “M Bole Toh.” The song was being prepared for a music session with Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
At the time, Shah Rukh Khan was reportedly being considered for the lead role. The song needed to balance the character’s street-style language with the actor’s screen image. Sanjay Dutt eventually took on the role of Munna, while the song became one of the film’s memorable musical moments.
The collaboration helped establish a creative connection between Samji and Hirani that is now returning for the third film.
Why Munna Bhai 3 Took So Long
Hirani has repeatedly said that he does not want to make a sequel simply because the franchise remains popular. In earlier interviews, the filmmaker explained that he has struggled to find a story that works beyond the interval and delivers a satisfying conclusion.
The director has also acknowledged that the pressure of matching the first two films has slowed the process. Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. arrived in 2003, followed by Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006, which introduced audiences to the idea of “Gandhigiri.”
Both films became enduring favourites, making the third instalment a particularly high-expectation project.

The franchise’s central appeal remains the friendship between Munna and Circuit. Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi are expected to return, although the latest report focuses primarily on the writing development and does not provide a detailed plot or complete cast confirmation.
