Kristen Stewart is returning to the strange, supernatural territory of Personal Shopper—and she is doing it with Olivier Assayas again.
Stewart will lead the French filmmaker’s next feature, Spiritual World, alongside Riley Keough, Wagner Moura, Vicky Krieps, Niels Schneider and Barbara Sukowa. Production is currently scheduled to begin in February 2027 and continue through April across France and Germany.
For Stewart and Assayas, this will be their third movie together after Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper. And judging by the first story details, the reunion is much closer to their eerie second collaboration than their first.
Kristen Stewart plays a clairvoyant woman named Ada
Stewart will play Ada, described as a haunted young woman with clairvoyant abilities who begins experiencing mysterious premonitions. Beyond that setup, the filmmakers are keeping the plot largely under wraps.
That brief description immediately recalls Personal Shopper, Assayas’ 2016 supernatural drama in which Stewart played a woman attempting to contact her dead twin brother while working in Paris.
Spiritual World is expected to return Assayas to the supernatural and fantastical territory he has explored in both Personal Shopper and Irma Vep. Earlier this year, the director had even teased that he had written something more in the vein of Personal Shopper as the project he wanted to make after The Wizard of the Kremlin.
The roles being played by Keough, Moura, Krieps, Schneider and Sukowa have not yet been revealed, so it is too early to say how they connect to Ada’s visions.
Stewart and Assayas have a strong history together
Their reunion carries more weight because the previous two collaborations proved important for both filmmaker and star.
Stewart appeared opposite Juliette Binoche in 2014’s Clouds of Sils Maria and later won a César for her performance. She then reunited with Assayas for Personal Shopper, which pushed their collaboration into much stranger territory through grief, ghosts and questions about whether the supernatural experiences Stewart’s character was having were real.
Spiritual World appears ready to revisit some of those ideas without simply becoming a Personal Shopper sequel.
That distinction is worth making. Nothing announced so far suggests the films share characters or continuity. The connection is tonal: another Stewart-Assayas story built around a woman whose ordinary reality is disrupted by something she cannot easily explain.
The supporting cast makes this one to watch
Assayas has also assembled an unusually strong international ensemble around Stewart.
Riley Keough arrives after projects ranging from Daisy Jones & The Six to Under the Silver Lake. Wagner Moura continues a particularly busy international run, while Vicky Krieps, Niels Schneider and veteran German actor Barbara Sukowa give Spiritual World a distinctly European ensemble.
The film will be produced by Olivier Delbosc through Curiosa Films, with Arte France Cinéma backing the project as a co-producer and pre-buyer.
Assayas and Delbosc previously worked together on The Wizard of the Kremlin, the director’s political drama starring Jude Law and Paul Dano. Spiritual World sounds like a deliberate shift away from that film’s geopolitical scale toward something more intimate and uncanny.
There is currently no announced release date or distributor.
With cameras not scheduled to roll until February 2027, the project is still at an early stage. But Stewart returning to Assayas for another supernatural story is already enough to make Spiritual World stand out—especially when their last trip into ghostly territory produced one of the more unusual films in either of their careers.
