Taylor Swift is not finished with The Life of a Showgirl after all.
Swift announced Wednesday that an expanded edition, The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, will arrive on September 25, adding four newly recorded songs to her 2025 album: “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon.” The announcement follows Tuesday’s reveal of “Patient Zero,” which initially appeared to be a standalone new single.
The more interesting part of the announcement is where those songs came from. These do not appear to be tracks Swift simply held back from the original album. According to Swift, she returned to Sweden with longtime collaborators Max Martin and Shellback after Showgirl’s record-breaking debut—and they ended up writing again.
“We did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs,” Swift wrote while announcing the project.
The Encore changes what Swift originally said about Showgirl
When Swift introduced The Life of a Showgirl in 2025, she was unusually firm about the album being complete at 12 tracks.
Speaking on the New Heights podcast, she said there was no hidden 13th track or larger collection waiting behind it, explaining that the album had been deliberately constructed as a tightly defined 12-song project.
That makes The Encore different from a conventional deluxe edition assembled from songs cut during the original sessions.
Swift says the four additions were written after the original album achieved its historic opening week. The 12-track Showgirl debuted with 4.002 million equivalent album units in the U.S., according to Luminate figures reported by Billboard, surpassing Adele’s 25 for the biggest opening week of the modern tracking era.
Swift says that success prompted a celebratory trip to Sweden with Martin and Shellback, where the trio returned to the studio. In other words, The Encore is less about restoring unused material and more about extending an album after its release changed the circumstances around it.
Four songs turn the 12-track album into a 16-track edition
The original Life of a Showgirl contained 12 songs, beginning with “The Fate of Ophelia” and ending with the Sabrina Carpenter collaboration that gives the album its title. The Encore keeps those tracks intact and places its four new songs at the end.

That increases the album from 12 to 16 tracks—a one-third expansion—but without changing the sequencing of the original record.
“Patient Zero” had already been teased through a series of zero-related clues across Swift’s social accounts and website before its September 22 announcement. Variety also noted clues pointing toward the word “encore,” meaning the single was ultimately the first part of a larger continuation of the Showgirl era.
Showgirl is getting an encore almost a year later
The Life of a Showgirl originally arrived on October 3, 2025, making the September 25 release of The Encore almost exactly one year later.
That timing gives the title a particularly literal meaning. Rather than immediately following the original release with bonus material, Swift let the album complete nearly a full year of its own cycle before returning with newly written songs.
It also keeps the Showgirl era moving without announcing an entirely new studio album.
The biggest unanswered question now is what the four songs sound like—and whether “Patient Zero” signals a shift from the bright theatrical identity of the original record. We will not have to wait long to find out: The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore arrives Friday, September 25.
