Kaantha Confirms OTT Premiere After Theatrical Run — Here’s When You Can Stream It

Kaantha Confirms OTT Premiere

A Stylish Retro Thriller Heads to Streaming Sooner Than Expected

After its theatrical release on November 14, Selvamani Selvaraj’s period thriller Kaantha, starring Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashri Borse, Samuthirakani and Rana Daggubati, is gearing up for a quick digital debut. The retro mystery, set against the backdrop of 1950s Madras, will now find a new audience at home as its OTT rollout has officially been announced.

Netflix revealed on Monday that the film will begin streaming on the platform from December 12, arriving in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam, while the Kannada version will release under the title Shaantha. The streamer teased the film with a cryptic caption hinting at ego clashes, revenge, and an unraveling mystery — the central threads of the movie.

Fans React to the Early Digital Release Window

The announcement drew mixed and curious reactions online. Several fans celebrated the short wait, while a few questioned the quick transition from theatres to streaming. Many pointed out that Tamil and Telugu films typically shift to OTT within three to four weeks of release, making Kaantha’s move fairly standard for the industry.

One viewer raved that it was “the best film of the year,” while another commented that they would be watching it specifically “for Lady Superstar Bhagyashri.” A handful of fans were excited for a rewatch, praising the film’s performances despite its uneven critical reception.

Inside the World of Kaantha

Directed by Selvamani Selvaraj and co-written by Thamizh Prabha, Kaantha is a stylish period mystery produced by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media and Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films.

Set in mid-20th century Madras, the film follows Dulquer’s character, superstar Thiruchengode Kalidasa Mahadevan (TKM), whose ego clashes with his former mentor, Ayya — played by Samuthirakani — when they join forces on a horror production. What begins as a battle of pride turns into a spiralling crisis when a death on the set places both men under the police radar.

Bhagyashri Borse portrays a budding actress named Kumari, while Rana Daggubati steps into the role of Inspector Phoenix, the officer piecing together the chaotic puzzle.

Box Office and Reception

Kaantha completed its theatrical run with a worldwide collection of ₹35.36 crore, a respectable figure for a niche period thriller. Reviews were mixed, but Dulquer Salmaan’s commanding screen presence, Samuthirakani’s intensity, and Bhagyashri’s breakout performance were widely praised across early screenings and critic circles.

According to Statesman News Service, the film’s craft, production design and atmospheric world-building helped it stand out despite narrative inconsistencies.

Final Words

Kaantha may have had an uneven run in theatres, but its intriguing setting, sharp performances, and slow-burn mystery have built steady post-release curiosity. With its December 12 digital premiere, the film now heads into the OTT space — a platform where period thrillers and character-driven dramas often find a second wave of appreciation.
