Even before its release, Welcome To The Jungle has managed to spark conversations for more than just its massive ensemble cast. While the comedy entertainer brings together some of Bollywood’s most recognizable faces, many viewers questioned why actresses Disha Patani and Jacqueline Fernandez appeared to have such limited roles in the film. The criticism largely centered around whether the female characters were included only for glamour instead of meaningful participation in the story. Director Ahmed Khan has now addressed those concerns and shared why the film was designed that way from the very beginning.
The Akshay Kumar-led comedy features nearly 35 actors, making it one of the biggest ensemble casts seen in a mainstream Hindi film in recent years. Alongside Akshay, the film reunites several familiar comedy stars including Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Arshad Warsi, Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Shreyas Talpade, Aftab Shivdasani, Raveena Tandon, Lara Dutta, Disha Patani and Jacqueline Fernandez. With so many established performers sharing the screen, balancing every role naturally became one of the biggest creative challenges during production.
Ahmed Khan Says The Film Was Always Built Around Comedy Veterans
Responding to the criticism in an interview with Hindustan Times, Ahmed Khan explained that Welcome To The Jungle was always conceived as a comedy driven by some of the industry’s most experienced comic performers. According to the filmmaker, the screenplay focused on the actors who have spent years building their reputation in comedy, and the narrative was shaped around that strength instead of trying to distribute equal dialogue among everyone.
He said, “When you have such solid actors like Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Shreyas, Aftab, Arshad, Akshay; you know they are kings of comedy, inke beech mein ladkiyon ka dialogue daal ke kya hoga. (When you have such strong comedy performers like Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Shreyas, Aftab, Arshad and Akshay—they’re all kings of comedy. Among them, even if you give the women more dialogues, it doesn’t really make a difference).”
Ahmed further explained that everyone who joined the project was aware of the type of film they were signing up for. He suggested that each actor understood the purpose of their character before filming began, and the performances were designed to support the larger story rather than compete for equal prominence. From his perspective, the screenplay demanded different levels of involvement depending on where each character fit into the overall narrative.
Managing A Cast Of More Than 30 Actors Was Never Going To Be Easy
The director also spoke about the practical difficulty of handling such an unusually large ensemble. He pointed out that Welcome To The Jungle includes around 34 actors, making it unrealistic to provide lengthy screen time for every individual. According to Ahmed Khan, even allocating a few extra minutes to each performer would have stretched the film far beyond a reasonable runtime.
He maintained that every actor received scenes based on what the story required instead of following a formula of equal dialogue or equal appearances. Ahmed also dismissed the suggestion that the female cast had been overlooked, saying the roles they played were written according to the needs of the script. In his view, the film’s comedy format naturally placed greater focus on performers who have long been associated with the genre.
The filmmaker additionally revealed that the actresses themselves were satisfied with their parts despite the public debate surrounding their screen presence. He also highlighted the much-discussed Kaanta Laga remix sequence, describing it as one of the film’s major attractions. At the same time, Ahmed noted that Raveena Tandon and Lara Dutta have substantial roles in the story, suggesting audiences should wait until the film releases before judging every character’s contribution.
Welcome Franchise Returns With Another Star-Packed Comedy
The Welcome franchise has built its popularity on ensemble comedy, chaotic situations and memorable comic timing rather than individual character arcs. Earlier installments became fan favorites because of performers like Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor, whose chemistry often carried the films. With Welcome To The Jungle, the makers appear to be expanding that formula even further by assembling one of the biggest comedy line-ups Bollywood has attempted.
Whether Ahmed Khan’s explanation convinces audiences will likely depend on how the finished film balances its enormous cast on screen. For now, the discussion has added another layer of curiosity ahead of the movie’s release, with fans eager to see whether every character ultimately gets a memorable moment despite the crowded ensemble.
