A$AP Rocky is back in full chaos mode — and this time, he’s brought Winona Ryder along for the ride. The rapper-actor dropped the music video for “Punk Rocky” on January 5, the first release from his upcoming album Don’t Be Dumb, and it’s exactly as unhinged, playful, and punk-inspired as the title suggests.
A garage jam that spirals fast
Set during an out-of-control garage party, the video sees Rocky and his crew turning up the volume until the neighbourhood can’t ignore them anymore. Enter Winona Ryder, playing an unexpectedly wholesome neighbour who shows up with cookies — only to end up dancing along with Rocky as the madness unfolds.
The party soon attracts unwanted attention, including an aggressive neighbour trying to shut things down and, eventually, the police. The result? Rocky and his friends getting arrested mid-chaos — pink hair rollers, swollen eye, and all.
Punk energy with a softer heart
Musically, Punk Rocky leans into breezy indie-rock rather than hard rap, with Rocky singing about wanting love without heartbreak — a contrast that adds emotional weight beneath the anarchic visuals. The song’s softer core plays against the film’s rebellious tone, making the video feel both chaotic and oddly tender.
Alter egos take over
The video also brings to life five of Rocky’s six alter egos from Don’t Be Dumb. Rocky himself appears as GR1M, alongside Tommy Revenge as RUGAHAND, Thoto as BABUSHKA BOI, the Williams twins as SHIRTHEAD, and DUMMY making an appearance. Familiar faces like Danny Elfman, Thundercat, and A$AP Nast also pop up, adding to the film’s surreal edge.
Despite getting bailed out and restarting the party, Rocky’s character can’t help himself. He chases down the neighbour who tattled on them, fires shots, and — unsurprisingly — ends up arrested again. True to Rocky’s style, even jail can’t hold him for long, as he pulls off a dramatic escape using a lighter.
All roads lead to Don’t Be Dumb
Punk Rocky marks the official start of Rocky’s rollout for his fourth studio album, Don’t Be Dumb, set to release on January 16. The album artwork, created by Tim Burton in collaboration with Rocky, features all six of his personas and leans heavily into the album’s cinematic, character-driven concept.
Rocky previously teased the project as more than just an album — calling it a “movie” — and Punk Rocky feels very much like an opening scene.
Final words
With Winona Ryder casually stealing scenes, punk chaos meeting emotional vulnerability, and Rocky leaning fully into his alter-ego era, Punk Rocky sets the tone loud and clear. If this is how Don’t Be Dumb begins, the rest of the album promises to be just as unpredictable — and just as entertaining.
